Released in 1987 after Marcel Cellier brought never-before-heard recordings to the West, LE MYSTERE DES VOIX BULGARES was an explosive suprise for music lovers. Thirteen songs performed by the Bulgarian State Television Female vocal choir, the disc displayed a highly exotic method of singing where each singer has limited vocal range but piercing projection and resonance, and polyphony using intervals never heard in traditional Western art music. One thing should be said from the start: this is not authentic Bulgarian folk music, but rather sophisticated arrangements made by composers during the Communist era. Many of the lyrics here are from old folk songs, and the method of singing each singer displays is truly old, but you're crazy if you think any folk music has four-part counterpoint. Still, folk cultures are dying across Europe, and these arrangements are becoming all we have left of a precious tradition snuffed out by Western decadence. The disc opens with the droning "Pilentze Pee" which immediately gives the listener a full blast of this exotic tradition. With parallel seconds in the harmonic writing, pitches fluctuate strikingly yet under perfect control. Ditto for the eerie diaphonic chant of "Schopska Pesen". The mournful "Kalimankou Denkou" and "Pritouritze Planinata" are simplest in their harmony, and most nearly approach village singing. "Erghen Diado", where the choir is accompanied by drum, shows the humour stereotypically attributed to the people of the Shopsko region. While the music is phenomenal, I'm unhappy with Nonesuch's packaging. No lyrics or translations are provided for the songs--although since most are about death and unrequited love, this may be to spare some sense of magic for the listener who doesn't speak Bulgarian. The transliteration used is meant for speakers of French, and is filled with typos to boot, which makes it hard for one to reconstruct the original Cyrillic title of each song. Still, this is the best introduction to a fascinating choral tradition, and heavily recommended for open-minded music fans, lovers of Bulgarian culture, and students of the Bulgarian language. The four-star rating is given only because there's some dead wood, and to get thirteen songs that truly represent the best of this choral writing, you'd have to buy several CDs.

«Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares» – государственный болгарский радио- и телевизионный хор(состав варьируется). Руководитель – дирижер Дора Христова.
Основан в 1951 году знаменитым болгарским композитором Филипом Кутевым. Несколько раз номинировался на «Грэмми» и получил его в 1990 году за альбом «Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares. Volume Two».
Со времени своего основания выпустил десять альбомов. Хор активно сотрудничает с исполнителями разных стран (в том числе Горан Брегович, Кейт Буш, тувинский хор Хуун-Хуур-Ту), также принимает участие в написании саундтреков к кинофильмам.
Несмотря на то, что хор часто ездит по гастролям и записывается, иногда его солистки поют в других коллективах, например, «Angelite» (в него вошли три лучших голоса «Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares»), «Bulgarian National Folk Ensemble» (область Пирин), «Тракия».

In 1951, the father of Bulgarian concert folk music, Philip Koutev, established the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. His goals was to join the rich heritage of his country's solo folk songs with harmonies and arrangements that highlighted their beautiful timbres and irregular rhythms. One year later, the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir was founded. Then as now, its members are singers from the rural regions of Bulgaria, each an informal apprentice in the folk songs of her home. The ensemble, now under the direction of conductor Dora Hristova, has refined Koutev's original idea into a fine art. The Choir's imaginatively arranged songs join traditional folk melodies with sophisticated harmonies and compelling rhythms, performed in an exotic six-part vocal style. Repertoire is drawn from arrangements created by Bulgaria's most esteemed composers, among them Mr. Koutev, Krasimir Kyurkchiyski, Nikolai Kaufman and Petar Lyondev. The distinctive sounds of Bulgarian folk singing come from many cultural influences, as a country that was under the rule of the Tartar from central Asia and the Ottoman Turks. Many Asian elements can be heard in the use of modal scales, dissonant harmonies and rhythmical and metrical variety. The diaphonic singing tradition of two voices moving in parallel seconds, sevenths or ninths along with the metallic vocal timbres is preserved in the many arrangements. To western ears, this style of singing seems very strange. The a cappella singing is occasionally accompanied by traditional instruments. On this recording can be heard the flute-like kaval (Pritouritze Planinata), and the fiddle-like gadulka (Brei Yvane). The Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir is led by Philip Koutev and Krasimir Kyurkchiyski who were the forefathers of the Bulgarian folk movement. From the dissonance of "Pilentze Pee? to the beautiful melody of "Polegnala e Todora" this music is simple and enormously diverse.

Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares also knows as the Mystery of the Bulgarian voices Female Vocal Choir is known worldwide and has performed over 1250 concerts in the most prestigious halls around the world. The Grammy award-winning choir specializes in both traditional and contemporary Bulgarian folk music and performs a cappella under the expert direction of conductor Prof Dora Hristova, Ph.D. The choir is “one of the most distinctive groups in the world” (Columbus Dispatch, 6 Dec 2006) and gives concerts of unearthly beauty for the enthused and very often cheering audience. The choir’s secret weapon is its harmonies that break your heart. To Western ears, the intervals that are blended note choices sound unusual, even dissonant. Their microtonal harmonies produce a distinctive drone almost ungodly in its beauty. The fascination concerns one of the most unique sounds in music and multi-part a cappella arrangements delivered by up to 23 women dressed in traditional costumes representing the different regions in Bulgaria. “The "mystery" is in just how they combine diaphonic singing and dissonant harmonies to produce a breathtaking, otherworldly sound somewhere between the Muslim call to prayer and the Beach Boys”. /Guardian 7 Nov 2010/.
