This is the Gatemouth Brown cd I've been looking for/for a couple years. GATE's ON THE HEAT is the 'FIRST' album "Gatemouth" recorded after not seeing the inside of the studio for Six(!) years. It was after a 1972 trip through Europe that included an appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival that this Clarence Gatemouth Brown recording came to fruition.
The recording process that followed was a little unusual, so bear with me. I feel it is very telling how hard the 'producers' of this Gatemouth album were trying to get him (re)noticed. By the way GATE's ON THE HEAT is damn good (had to make that clear).
But, the first 9 songs were recorded in Herouville, France (1972) and consisted of Gate on guitar, violin, and vocals with Joe Wright assisting on guitar alongside organ-piano, bass, and a drummer Andre and Michel Herve and Christian Devaux, respectively.
Stateside, The Memphis Horns (I never noticed '4' Memphis Horns b4 and I don't believe they were ever better than here - Ed Logan, James Mitchell new to me) were recording (in Memphis, imagine that..) with their work being 'overdubbed' for GATE's ON THE HEAT.
With the album not complete by 1973 two more songs were then recorded in Memphis with musicians from the famed blues-roots band Canned Heat that included Henry Vestine on guitar, Richard Hite on bass, and Adolfo "Fito" De La Parra on drums. James Shane and Ed Beyer also played guitar and keyboards, respectively, on these 2 songs "Dollar Got the Blues" and the groovin', rhythm Title song.
Then, the London Strings Orchestra was overdubbed in '73 (for these 2 songs) as were the Memphis Horns, again.
When GATE's ON THE HEAT was released in '73 the songs "Jelly, Jelly" and "Never Ending Love for You" were left off giving the listener 41 minutes of music that resembles blues and rock boogie (the xtra guitar play of Vestine and Joe Wright offering a different (from Gate) good, catchy rock-n-roll beat - kind of reminded me of Hot Tuna with Papa John Creach at Tuna's best; and of course Canned Heat).
For the 1993 re-release "Never Ending Love for You" (I would guess was originally left off for the very obvious country sound complete with pretty female background vocals -- singer names left off liner notes, kind of rude) is back; and "Jelly, Jelly" is also back; as is an added Live Instrumental from the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, and an all new set of musicians (no strings or horns). "Louisiana Breakdown" is a nice 3 minute 8 second "Live" touch with Gate thanking the crowd when he's finished.
GATE's ON THE HEAT is worthy of all the praise and all the flashy adjectives I can muster. I'll add I have not listened to the same album over and over for 3 days straight since "Gate's" Live in Austin, TX (1996 with dvd). Maybe, Luther Allison has gotten my attention (Live in Chicago album) as much. My two favorite performers these days.
The 2 songs that I heard Gatemouth play before - "Dollar Got the Blues" (Brown wrote himself), and "St. Louis Blues" - are done in such variation that I almost did not recognize "Dollar Got Blues" because of parade-band-sound of "and the monkey wrapped his tail around the flag pole" music (no lyrics) that Gate and Canned Heat slowly turn into "Dollar Got the Blues". Damn fun, it is.
"Funky Mama" kind of speaks for itself musically, and "The Drifter" is the obvious instrumentation, tour d' force led by Gate's peerless violin work. "Drifter" is one of those 7 plus minute demonstrations of pure professional sensation that you don't want to end (with great "the devil in (me) lyrics" by Gatemouth too).
One last strange thing about the re-release of this album is the EXACT same album released with same name (Gate's On The Heat) with different cover design (Gatemouth caricature painting). The first 10 songs are the same (as the one I have) in name and general length (give or take 2 seconds). The difference is the last two songs (11 and 12) are NOT "Never Ending Love For You" (country) and "Louisiana Breakdown" (Live from Montreux song). I did not pay for the 2 different songs that actually run a full 15 minutes in length. This/that version cost 18 bucks for the xtra 8 minutes of music. I spent $7.77 for my version of Gate's ON THE HEAT. 53 and a half minutes of a great blues-rock, boogie, Texas 2 step and a shuffle slowed temporarily by "Please, Mr. Nixon" blues ... 'Don't stop the welfare line...' very politically correct for 1972.

Gates On The Heat is not a perfect recording and the more I listened the more I realize you can argue it was over produced (see overdubbing).

Recorded Nashville 1965 with unknown sax, piano, bass and drums. Нэшвилльские записи Гейта, датированные 1965-м годом. В промежутке - три вещи Сонни Боя Уильямсона, блюзовый стандарт Goin' Down Slow, композиции самого Брауна. Вся музыка довольно легкая и с определенным джазовым оттенком, Кларенс играет в основном на гитаре, но немного и на скрипке. Альбом выбускался под разными названиями: 1974 San Antonio Ballbuster (Red Lightnin') или The Nashville Session - 1965. Данный диск выпущен в серии Mestres Do Blues – N° 17 (есть еще вариант Charly Blues Masterworks) и длится всего 32 минуты. Не самый интересный альбом Гейта, но тут есть что послушать. Александр Панин,blues.ru Clarence Gatemouth Brown был опытным артистом, у которого, вероятно, больше записей, потерянных со временем, чем ему когда-либо приписывали. Этот родившийся в Луизиане мастер всех инструментов, которые он брал в руки, прославился в Техасе, где вырос. Я бы хотел выбрать один альбом и сказать: "Это определяющая запись", но, как и у многих из этих старых музыкантов, записи не обязательно отражают одно усилие или даже один период в их карьере.
Мне трудно точно определить высоту его карьеры или его навыков. Он мастерски играет с первой до последней записи. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown was a versatile and crowd-pleasing entertainer throughout his long career, but it's easy to overlook just how explosive a guitarist he was in the early days, a situation this first volume in Classic Records' chronological survey of Brown's complete recorded output helps remedy. Collecting both sides of his first two singles for Aladdin Records, released in 1947, and his earliest sides for Don Robey's Peacock Records drawn from sessions dating between 1947 and 1951, this intriguing set spotlights mostly up-tempo jump blues pieces, and features small horn bands (Maxwell Davis' band for the Aladdin tracks and Jack McVea's band for several of the Peacock tracks). Brown wasn't yet playing his trademark fiddle in the studio (the fiddle would make its debut later in Brown's stay at Peacock) and his singing was far smoother than the rustic approach he adopted late in his career, but his guitar playing was never more biting, energetic and gutbucket (and ultimately influential) than it was on these sides. anguishing for much of his career under the label of "T-Bone Walker disciple", over the last two decades, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown has shown his detractors that he is not just if he ever was a T-Bone copyist, nor even simply a blues musician, but an instrumental wizard steeped in all aspects of American roots music and jazz. Brown was born on 18th April 1924 in Vinton, Louisiana, near Lake Charles, but his family moved to Orange, Texas, when he was just a few weeks old and he has always considered himself a Texan. His father was a fiddler of local renown who played rural country, cajun and polka styles and his elder brother, James "Widemouth" Brown was a proficient guitarist who later recorded blues in Houston in 1951 after his younger brother success; in this diverse musical environment, young Clarence absorbed all the influences that were offered, including the hillbilly and big band jazz and western swing music he listened to avidly on the family radio. As a teenager he began to favour the wry comedy and jump blues of Louis Jordan and the smoky vocals and distinctive guitar style of T-Bone Walker, and these two joint mentors have remained strong influences to this day. Clarence is best known as a blues guitarist, but, just as he easily straddles musical genres, he can as easily display his musical virtuosity on a variety of instruments, including fiddle, viola, harmonica, mandolin and drums. In his late teens he drummed with several local territory bands, but increasingly favoured the electric guitar and, after successfully standing in for his ailing idol T-Bone Walker at Don Robey' Bronze Peacock nightclub in Houston in 1947, he was signed to a contract by Robey who secured his first recording session with Aladdin in Los Angeles. Within eighteen months, Robey had launched his own label - Peacock Records - and Gatemouth continued his recording career on Peacock from 1949 until 1961, scoring a Billboard r&b chart hit just once in November 1949 when both sides of Peacock 1504 ("Mary Is Fine" and "My Time Is Expensive") entered the Top 10. He then recorded for small independents like Cue, Cinderella and Hit Sound and had a minor country hit with "May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" in 1965 for Hermitage, subsequently purchased by Chess and released on LP. The following year found Brown leading the house band on a Dallas TV musical show. In the 1970s Gate began making a name by appearing in various jazz and blues festivals, as well as recording duets with country guitarist Roy Clark and recording for European labels like Black & Blue and Barclay. The last two decades have witnessed Gatemouth consolidating his position as an international ambassador of American music and recording prolifically in all styles for Rounder, Alligator, Verve, Bullseye Blues and Blue Thumb; he was nominated for a Grammy Award for many of these LPs after winning a Grammy in 1982 for his first Rounder release, and has since been inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall Of Fame and received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation.
This CD explores Gate's first four years as a recording artist. His first session in California with Maxwell Davis' big band displays his debts to T-Bone Walker and Louis Jordan, but also shows a highly original approach to his singing and playing which would itself become influential in the repertoire of younger acolytes like Guitar Slim and Goree Carter. The accompaniment by Jack McVea's smaller band on the inaugural session for Peacock is much funkier and Gate's first international, "Atomic Energy" is breathtaking. By the next Peacock sessions, recorded with local musicians, Brown's playing and singing is showing a swaggering confidence which emerges mostly on exciting birth-of-rock'n'roll blasters like "I Live My Life", "Boogie Rambler", "It Can Never Be That Way" and "She Walk Right In".
