Album Info & Reviews
All songs by Slumberwood, except 7. (Lyrics: P. Ballard / Music: Slumberwood) Produced by Marco Fasolo
Recorded at Ectoplasmic Studio between 2007 an 2008
Mastered by Max Trisotto Marco Fasolo played drums on 1,4,3 Special thanks to Giulio R, Marco D, Federico Z, Marco F, Stefano B On their debut album, Slumberwood show themselves to be a good entry in the quietly resurgent field of arty Italian rock in the 21st century. Dramatic, sometimes melodramatic, but with an ear for the cinematically mysterious more than the operatic, Yawling Night Songs reflects clear influences from improvisational psychedelia over the decades. The slow-burning crunch and grind of "Yahoo," shaded by distant chanting, and the wheezing, down-home harmonica rave-up of "Il Verme Solitario" are fairly heavy tracks, but that's far from their only mode. Unlike the more direct whimsies of their countrymen and near contemporaries Jennifer Gentle, the incomprehensible but increasingly agitated vocals on "Galline," and distanced, singing sighs on "Mr. Sandman" are unsettling steps. But the initial staccato and then sweetly flowing acoustic guitars of "Thru Crop Fields" are ragged echoes of sound that loom below, and the surging, electric, near-post-punk lope of "Help Me Grampa," big but not overwhelming, are further balances. If anything, Slumberwood might best resemble such collectives as Starving Weirdos, playing with sound as they see fit to create songs somewhere between genre exercise and their own curious logic. - Ned Raggett, AMG Now for an Italian noise-collective, citing Nurse with Wound, Coil, Big Star, and This Heat. You know what? All of those show, even Big Star (tracks like ‘Holocaust’ and ‘Kangaroo’, from Sister-Lovers). Mysterious, though, that they didn’t namecheck The Faust Tapes, because the processed warbling, and semi-random axe-work on ‘Galline’ and ‘Il Verme Solitario’ (tracks 2 & 4) is similarly excruciating. Elsewhere, the lo-fi combination of noise and sweet melodies comes close to early Mercury Rev and early Mogwai EPs (tracks 3 & 5). Having been listening to the semi-lost debut from Sigur Ros (Von) it’s easy to feel optimistic about the collective focusing their ambitions. (6 / 10) - Drowned In Sound Next up, we place the spotlight on Italy a country that seems to be quietly developing an underground scene of its own at the moment, much of it based around the success of Jennifer Gentle, whose mainman Marco Fasolo is responsible for the production of “Yawling Night Songs”, the debut album from Slumberwood, a five piece band (including visuals) that include elements of Kraut, folk, electronics and psychedelia in their sound, creating a fresh and diverse collection of tracks that sparkle with life. Opening track “Yahoo” is a droning Kraut rock sprawl that builds into a dizzying crescendo, whilst “Galline” is an echo laden freak-out smeared with lysergic intent. Having confused the listeners’ senses, peace is restored with the rippling ambience of “Thru Crop Fields”, a delicate acoustic piece that calms the nerves with its simple beauty. Also included is a cover of “Mr Sandman”, the song transformed into a drifting electronic pulse, whilst the final song “The Bride Side”, is a sprightly folk dance that leads us back into the real world, dazed and grinning happily. - terrascope.co.uk
