The interaction between computer science technology and freeform musical creative process becomes a central point in this international collaboration of three artists from Belarus and USA. The abstract soundscapes are obscured by intricate structures, acoustic phenomena and electronic effects, it's going to infinity and never repeat itself. The finest harmony of soundfield is credited to the principles of intuitive simulation, realised through the system of computer-aided instruments.
Andrey Savitsky (Minsk, Belarus) - graphic designer and composer, whose main attitude is searching for new aesthetical forms and exploring computer-controlled sound and visual communications. Since 1990, he studied photography and had exhibitions in Netherlands, USA and Poland. In the meantime, he developed videoart works for various music performances, and got interested in experiments with sound and graphic design. In 2000, he found personal project h.h.t.p. also as the label for all related audio production. Four limited edition albums were released: "Forming", "Tragmatics", "Wave Weavers" and "Pljonka Mira". The music is very different, from structured noisescapes and glitchy ambient to strange ethnic songs with software-aided voices, implementation of dub, drum-n-bass, rhythm-n-blues and hip-hop styles is also prominent.. Apart from his musical efforts, he continue with interactive multimedia projects, amongst others - "Webology" videoprojection and "Trashback" videoinstallation. He also performed in such festivals as Unsound (Poland), Microstraava (Latvia), Elka.Mnsk (Belarus).
Dmitry Gelfand (New Yourk, USA) - visual artist and composer. Inside of the group of artists "Poratablepalace", he creates interdisciplinary art works which integrate chemi-physical experimentation with optics and computer science. Their central interest is the propagation of information by means of wave phenomena: electro-magnetic (light, radiation etc.) and isomorphic (sound) wave forms. Dmitry Gelfand graduated from NYU Film School and studied musical composition with Timothy Vincent Clark, a disciple of Olivier Messiaen. During 1998-1999, Portablepalace curated the "Psycho-Acoustic" series of electronic and computer music in New York, including collaborations with Morton Subotnik and Taylor Deupree. Also, among their credits is the postproduction for a 35mm film "Radioman" that won a Gold Prize at the Prix Leonardo Festival in Italy and intended to be released by Mille Plateaux. They shot, edited, and realized the computer animation and sound design for the video piece of Osvaldo Romberg's opera installation "Besame Mucho", which is being exhibited presently within the Media Series at White Box. Their other collaborations include work with Russian conceptual artist Sergei Bugaev, known as Afrika. Most recent events includes "Camera Lucida" in Russia, USA and Germany, and "Opening Coccyx" at Die Schachtel, Milan, Italy (with Richard Chartier).
Kirill Domnich (Minsk, Belarus) - poet, musician, software and artificial intelligence systems developer.
Cavitation is the phenomenon where small cavities of partial vacuum form in fluid, then rapidly collapse, producing a sharp sound. These cavities are caused by still object within moving fluid or by moving object in still fluid. If you focus ultrasonic waves into water, tiny bubbles will be produced, forming a fractal structure and radiating sound by themselves. This is a cavitation field being produced by a radially symmetric sound field - acoustic cavitation. - Monochrome Vision
Monochrome Vision’s fourth release, Cavitation by h.h.t.p. and portable palace sits in between the two Spanish releases in the catalogue. It is produced Dmitry Gelfand from New York and Andrey Savitsky and Kirill Domnich from Minsk (home to a surprisingly active musical underground). The three long pieces date from 2002 and while also “cold” in feel, they are more formal in their tone, and are closer to the electro-acoustic than the industrial context. However, the sounds are at least partly (post)-industrial in spirit if not in origin and ought to interest the “industrialised listener”. In the way it excavates cavernous space it mirrors some industrial ambient but is less theatrical than that “genre” tends to be. Although texturally clinical, Cavitation has a markedly eerie undercurrent that eventually becomes overt and suggests a techno-pagan ritual invoking dead machines, offering a simultaneously nostalgic and prophetic comment on our present reality. - icrn.blogspot.com
