Producer – Mickey Modern, Nine Below Zero Nine Below Zero had only released one record prior to this live album, a self-produced EP, but they'd already gotten over a hundred gigs under their belt by the time the U.K. division of A&M Records signed them. The label wisely decided that a live recording was the way to break this band. The result was a classic artifact of the late British punk scene, a searing blues-rock set that recalled the energy of the early performances of the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, and the Animals, but presented in a manner closer to the punk era that had just come to a close and which slotted right in with the contemporary mod revival. Anyone who enjoyed the first three or four Dr. Feelgood albums should definitely try Live at the Marquee on for size. The covers range all over the R&B map, including Willie Dixon (whose "I Can't Quit You Baby" gets a killer extended rendition that never lets up in intensity), Holland-Dozier-Holland, and Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, interspersed with a handful of band originals, of which lead guitarist Dennis Greaves' wild, crunchy "Stop Your Naggin'" is the highlight. And the recording itself strikes a perfect balance between a close, personal band sound and a fair level of room ambience and crowd presence. This album is about as good as it gets when it comes to the many attempts to put live music onto disc and re-creating the music, the atmosphere, and the raw emotions that being part of a live gig. Here are some great songs, superb harmonica and guitar breaks, and the back line keeps thumping away. There is no let up, it just keeps chugging and chugging ...
This is the real R+B, yes Rhythm and Blues, I don't think I will ever recover from this one!

For many discerning fans, Nine Below Zero far outpaced the Jam wannabes that doomed Britain's so-called mod revival era. They even opened for the Who, whose favorite producer, Glyn Johns, oversaw this second A&M album. (Like other 1979-era revivalist bands, the group has re-formed on an intermittent basis.) Nine Below Zero show themselves as sharp players with plenty of hooks up their sleeves. Stix Burkey and Peter Clark whack out a disciplined rhythm attack without fussiness or flourishes, leaving the interplay to singer/harpist Mark Feltham and the main songwriter, lead guitarist Dennis "The Menace" Greaves. Greaves' tunes successfully execute '60s R&B toughness, yet are updated enough to grace a teen scooter fanatic's good books. "One Way Street" is a punchy, doing-it-my-way anthem ("They told me to go by the book/But look at the time that it took"), while the roughhouse R&B of the title track and "Treat Her Right" come across like a speedier Yardbirds. The feel's that close, but Greaves and cohorts have the skill to pull it off. The group expresses their bluesier side on "Ain't Comin' Back" and the slow-burning "Sugar Mama," and also dips back into '50s-style roots rave-ups with a credible cover of "Rockin' Robin." "Helen"'s trebly poppiness offers another nice diversion, being a working stiff's plea to his anxious wife ("You're the one I'm thinking of/When I come home late from my job"). An unpretentious sense of humor also makes itself heard on the title track and "Liquor Lover," which chides a girlfriend who's too fond of the fizzy stuff (which is reminiscent of how Rockpile sent up overeating on their own "Knife and Fork"). Greaves' quest for authenticity occasionally falls flat; "Three Times Enough" is as barely disguised a rewrite of "The Train Kept a-Rollin'" as you'll ever hear. However, the group's enthusiasm is contagious in all the right places, as typified by its anthemic closer, "You Can't Please All the People All the Time." Underrated and overdue, Nine Below Zero get the re-issue treatment, complete with live set that captures their scorching heyday.
They were a hard one to pin down all those years ago. The obvious Feelgoods influence was there, late 70s, but they were way too cocksure and sharp to fit in with the decaying pub rock scene. Sure, they were energetic enough to be tied in with punk but they had the musical chops and grounding in R&B and the blues that kept them separate. The mod revival toddled along and toddled off again pretty quickly and despite Nine Below Zero having the monochromatic razor-creased suits and the proper influences, they weren’t pretty boy enough for most of the fledgling modsters. In fact, let’s be honest, Nine Below Zero looked like they’d be more likely spotted running out of a bank holding sawn-off shotguns and wearing balaclavas than admiring each others’ scooters and three-button suits.
Building a fiery live reputation in the capital and signing rapidly with A&M they released, in the style of the Feelgoods and Eddie And the Hot Rods, a debut record that was recorded live, showcasing the sweaty, feverish shows they were renowned for. Live At The Marquee scorched their reputation large in the consciousness and the band seemed set for great things.
Their sophomore release in 1981 only served to enhance the band’s reputation. The Glyn Johns produced Don’t Point Your Finger (remastered and packaged here with a live 1981 Bristol set) is a thing of real wonder. If this was released today by a band like The Strypes we’d be worshipping at the altar of the new best thing. No doubt due to the quality of the competition at the time and despite entering the charts twice, the album wasn’t the massive hit it deserved to be. At the time, 9BZ toured with The Who and The Kinks and made a legendary appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test which is still pretty staggering today.
Don’t Point Your Finger delivers on all counts; One Way Street is all chopping guitar growl and Mark Feltham’s swooping blues harp with the don’t-mess-with-me snarl and pleading croon of Dennis Greaves’ vocal delivery. Doghouse takes the band’s Sonny Boy Williamson/Son House/BB King influences and drags them kicking and screaming into some dank London boozer and kicks the shit out of them. It’s all short, sharp and very good fun. Yeah, it’s the blues, but without the angst and Clapton-style ham-fisted attempts at middle-class white-boy-wishing-he-was-from-the-delta that infects the genre. Nine Below Zero don’t pretend to be anything other than fans who love playing this stuff. The energy and verve they bring to these songs is palpable and as infectious as rabies. Helen takes their typical Rhythm and Blues template and adds the kitchen sink drama that made Costello and Squeeze such big successes.
The live set from 1981 (The Granary in Bristol, recorded for BBC 1 In Concert) is pretty irresistible. Opening with Don’t Point Your Finger At The Guitar Man it sets out its stall quickly and succinctly. The crowd goes ape shit and the group are a finely tuned and aggressive sounding bunch. It’s no surprise to learn that 9BZ barely had a day off the road in their early years as this sounds like a group at the top of their game with the bass/drums combo of Brian Bethel and Mickey Burkey in swaggering form. Greaves, of course, is a guitar slinger of some repute; his searing chords and biting leads would have given a certain Mr. Weller a run for his money.
The live set includes a few songs from the next album and it’s interesting to hear their gestation and evolution, particularly 11+11 and True Love Is A Crime which are staples of the band’s set to this day.

Third Degree features more sophisticated songwriting but moves away from straight R&B, while Simon Boswell’s polished 80s pop-rock production smoothed out too many of the band’s rough edges. Catchy single 11 Plus 11 was performed on the first episode of TV show The Young Ones but didn’t sell and singer/guitarist Dennis Greaves took the mod-influenced pop-soul sound of Wipe Away Your Kiss further with his next band The Truth after Nine Below Zero split when the album also failed to deliver significant chart success. 1982 wasn’t the best year for purists like NBZ who found themselves between the rock and a plastic place of the new decade. More so, the band’s hectic touring apparently didn’t leave much time for writing, and when the quartet entered the studio to stir a follow-up to "Don't Point Your Finger", about a half of the new songs had been road-tested for about a year. Not that it smoothed the recording process, guided once again by Glyn Johns who cooked a punchy, if dry, sound, but then the group encountered the scenario their producer was in with THE BEATLES’ “Get Back” sessions, and, on demand from A&M, recut “Third Degree” with Simon Boswell. Now, there’s a chance to compare the two versions, as this reissue contains both sharing no less than seven songs of which “Sugarbeat (And Rhythm Sweet)” is a prime example of what the label wanted.
The initially spiky piece is much more sharply polished on the released variant that’s significantly longer – as if shaped for a 12-inch single – and features funky guitar so typical of the day and so uncharacteristic previously for Dennis Greaves, while the latest take on “You Can’t Say Yes And You Can’t Say No” is really the ultimate one. So it might be a wise decision commercially; not for nothing “East Street, SE17” pushes its reggae back towards ska while the song’s chorus migrates to the start to drive a pop hook there on which Brian Bethell’s bass hangs nicely. By the same token, opener “11+11” buries its rockabilly edge under an echo-smeared veneer, albeit Mark Feltham’s harp comes out somewhat psychedelic in such surroundings that turn the slightly slouch “True Love Is A Crime” into a taut, multilayered winner, and Boswell’s piano ups the retro appeal of “Tearful Eye.”
But when the country-tinctured acoustic strum in “Egg On My Face” takes a backseat, letting forward organ and Mickey Burkey’s backbeat, the track’s sensuality evaporates, and once “Mama Talk To Your Daughter” was discarded, the LP’s texture became less rich. The catchy “Why Don’t You Try Me Tonight” vanished, too, as did – perhaps, for good, though – “Johnnie Weekend” and these got replaced with rather regular, yet almost proggy at the solo stakes, “Wipe Away Your Kiss” and ghastly, glossy “Mystery Man” that picks up the buzzy baton left on the ground by “Why Can’t We Be What We Want To Be,” pure ’80s despite its bluesy undertow, and passes it to another not-so-memorable but tellingly titled song, “You Don’t Love Me.” It signaled the nadir of NBZ’s flight and, the album’s chart action notwithstanding, the band broke up soon after its emergence. Still, the quartet would be back for their 10th anniversary, and they’re still burning at the third degree.

The band had undergone quite a transformation since the release of the previous album in 1991. Vocalist and harmonica supremo Mark Feltham had left, even though a few of his co-compositions feature on this album, and five (!) new members had been brought in. It's not obviously a change for the better. The songs veer more towards blues rock and straight rockers (as opposed to blues and R&B). There's still some harmonica but it's not as outstanding as before. Best songs: "Work Shy", "Down In The Dirt Again" and "She Gives Me The Shakes". savoytruffle

Nine Below Zero are an English blues band, who have a cult following throughout Europe, and became popular during the period 1980–1982 and are still performing currently throughout the UK, Scandinavia and Europe as of 2022.
The band was originally formed in South London in 1977, by guitarist and lead vocalist Dennis Greaves. He was joined by bassist Peter Clark, Kenny Bradley on drums, and vocalist and harmonica player Mark Feltham. They were originally named 'Stan's Blues Band' and for the next two years they played in London clubs. In 1979, while playing at The Thomas A'Beckett pub in the Old Kent Road they accepted an offer from former musician Mickey Modern to manage them. Modern persuaded the band to change their name. Greaves chose Nine Below Zero after the Sonny Boy Williamson II song. Modern was signed to A&M Records and he persuaded A&M to give him a record label, M&L Records, to launch Nine Blow Zero. In 1980 the band released their first album, Live at the Marquee, which was recorded on 16 June 1980. Bradley was replaced as drummer by Stix Burkey. By the end of that year they had built an audience, particularly amongst fans of the new wave of British heavy metal attracted by their high-energy, fast-tempo sound. They headlined at the Hammersmith Odeon and featured Alexis Korner, a long-time champion of new electric blues talent. In 1981, they released their second album, Don't Point Your Finger, produced by Glyn Johns. Johns complained the bass was too basic for the new songs, so the band subsequently replaced Clark with bass player Brian Bethell. The band appeared on The Chris Tarrant Show, The South Bank Show, O.T.T., The Old Grey Whistle Test, and the BBC2 comedy series The Young Ones performing "11+11". They also supported The Kinks and The Who on tour. Don't Point Your Finger reached number 56 on the UK Albums Chart. Their third album, Third Degree, contained "11+11", written by Greaves and Modern. The album spent six weeks in the chart and peaked at number 38. After this, the band split up. Bethell joined The Blow Monkeys and Feltham went on to session work, most notably for Rory Gallagher. Arnold became manager of The Truth, and refused Modern's suggestions to re-form Nine Below Zero. In 1990, IRS Records's interest in The Truth was fading, and Modern persuaded Feltham and Greaves to reunite for a tenth anniversary concert. Arnold - now worked at Harvey Goldsmith Ents – promoted the band at the Town and Country Club. They added Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O'Neill from Rory Gallagher's band on bass and drums. In 1992, Feltham left due to musical differences and was replaced by Alan Glen. Feltham returned in 2001 and the band has continued to tour and record. In 1995, harmonica player Billy Boy Miskimmin was added. In 2005, their track "Go Girl" was included in the Of Hands and Hearts: Music for the Tsunami Disaster Fund compilation album. In 2007, Nine Below Zero performed two acoustic concerts, producing the DVD Bring It On Home, including a live CD. Blues guitarist Gary Moore joined the band on stage to promote the DVD. In August 2008, Nine Below Zero appeared at the Rhythm Festival in Bedfordshire and later opened for Chuck Berry at The 100 Club. In 2009, the band started working towards a show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their debut album, Live at the Marquee. Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze offered to record the album that Greaves and Feltham had been writing. They recorded It's Never Too Late – their first collection of new songs since Refrigerator. European tours followed, including supporting Jools Holland and Paul Jones. In 2011, they worked with Tilbrook under the name The Co-operative. In July 2011 one track, the Beatles song "You Never Give Me Your Money" was used on a Mojo magazine special celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of Abbey Road. The band were preparing for a tour in 2012. Gerry McAvoy left at the end of 2011 to pursue a solo career. 2012 saw the return of Brian Bethell who played on Third Degree. The new lineup started performing in January with shows in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as the band enter their 35th year.[citation needed] Following on from 2012's remastered re-release of Nine Below Zero's live debut Live at the Marquee came a double instalment; remastered editions of the first two studio albums Don't Point Your Finger and Third Degree, each with a separate disc of bonus material, was released on 24 February 2014 through Universal Music. A nationwide month-long 22-date tour in support of The Stranglers began on 27 February 2014.[citation needed] The band then undertook a 35th Anniversary tour in Autumn 2014.[citation needed] The second half of 2016 saw the release of the band's first "big band" album, this new line made their live debut at Glastonbury Festival in June after which the big band toured extensively through the autumn and beyond. On 27 October 2018, the band played King George's Hall, Blackburn, supporting Bruce Foxton's From The Jam, with Russell Hastings performing lead vocals with songs from The Jam's All Mod Cons. 1992’s well-received Off The Hook was released with extra tracks in the US and Canada as Hot Music For A Cold Night to tie in with tours with Alannah Myles and Alvin Lee, and relentless gigging continued with their own headlining dates supplemented by support slots for Ray Davies and Brian May. 1995’s Ice Station Zebro also received good reviews, though it has not stood up quite as well. “Some albums just don’t click and gel for some unknown reason,” reflects Dennis. “Maybe it was because I co-wrote some of the songs with Nik Kershaw. It’s fair criticism to say that the album is perhaps too diverse.” This album features two songs from the movie Ski School. Ski School never had an official soundtrack released so I have been hunting these songs down for a long time. The two songs from this album that are from the movie are Burn Love and Thieves in the Night. These particular tracks are re-recordings of the originals. The tracks for the movie were made by the same members of the band but going by the name The Truth at the time. A great strong lp by this band with lots of famous help. Anchored by bass player Gerry McAvoy and strong vocals and guitar by Dennis Greaves this is a pleasant find. straight ahead rock with with blues influence along the lines of Rory Gallagher. sharp harp playing by Alan Glen give it more pazazz. Glenn Tilbrook is a busy fella these days; when he’s not playing solo acoustic shows, he can be found at the helm of his own group The Fluffers or rolling back the years with Squeeze. Somewhere in that hectic schedule, he’s managed to make his bow with a third band.
The Co-Operative is essentially Tilbrook saddling up with South London R&B warhorses Nine Below Zero, Squeeze’s labelmates at A&M back in the 80s. Zero frontman Dennis Greaves handles lead vocals for the catchy blues-pop of A Little Understanding and Because – all choppy guitars and rasping harmonica – while the tracks with Glenn on vocals lean more towards the misfit pocket portraits of his most celebrated day job (Chat Line Larry).
It’s all good fun, no one taking themselves too seriously and, while the original songs are solidly constructed, it’s the three cover versions on which the band really take flight. The Beatles’ You Never Give Me Your Money and Johnny Paycheck’s country stroller Satin Sheets mark The Co-Operative out as the most accomplished bar band on the block, while Tilbrook’s plaintive voice is perfect for Randy Crawford’s One Day I’ll Fly Away.
