В 1911 году Гарднер открывает адвокатскую контору в Мерседе, штат Калифорния.
Через несколько лет он переходит на работу в агентство по продажам, а ещё через 5 лет, в 1921 году, открывает адвокатскую контору «Шеридан, Орр, Драпо и Гарднер» в г. Вентура, штат Калифорния.
Гарднер завоёвывает популярность яркими выступлениями на судебных процессах до 1933 года, но после выхода своего первого детективного романа «Дело о бархатных коготках», решается посвятить себя литературе целиком.
Гарднер в 1946 году основал и до 1960 годов был одним из участников комитета «Суд последней надежды», правозащитной организации по пересмотру вынесенных смертных судебных приговоров. За документальную книгу об этой организации ему была присуждена премия Эдгара По Американской ассоциации детективных писателей 1962 года в номинации Гранд-мастер.
Гарднеру также принадлежит заслуга привлечения общественного внимания (путём публикации в 1962 году статьи в журнале «Life») к наскальным рисункам Нижней Калифорнии, часть которых была позднее причислена к памятникам Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.
Кроме того, в 1968 году, совместно с Чарльзом Хэпгудом, Гарднер участвовал в исследованиях так называемых фигурок Акамбаро, считавшихся подделками XX века.
В 1968 году Гарднер женился на давней своей секретарше Агнесе Бетель (1902—2002), ставшей прототипом Деллы Стрит, секретарши главного литературного героя Гарднера — адвоката Перри Мейсона.
Гарднер написал несколько серий романов. Наибольшее число произведений (более 80) включает серия, в которой главным героем является адвокат Перри Мейсон.
Под псевдонимом А. А. Фэйр Гарднер написал серию романов о частном сыщике Дональде Лэме и его начальнице Берте Кул, эта серия отчасти является пародией на серию Рекса Стаута о Ниро Вульфе и Арчи Гудвине.

1. Autumn sun beat against the window.
Perry Mason sat at t he big desk. There was about him the attitude of one who is waiting. His face in repose was like the face of a chess player who is studying the board. That face seldom changed expression. Only the eyes changed expression. He gave the impression of being a thinker and a fighter, a man who could work with infinite patience to jockey an adversary into just the right position, and then finish him with one terrific punch.
Book cases, filled with leather-backed books, lined the walls of the room. A big safe was in one corner. There were two chairs, in addition to the swivel chair which Perry Mason occupied. The office held an atmosphere of plain, rugged efficiency, as though it had absorbed something of the personality of the man who occupied it.
The door to the outer office opened, and Della Street, his secretary, eased her way into the room and closed the door behind her.
“A woman,” she said, “who claims to be a Mrs. Eva Griffin.” Perry Mason looked at the girl with level eyes.
“And you don’t think she is?” he asked.
She shook her head.
“She looks phony to me,” she said. “I’ve looked up the Griffins in the telephone book. And there isn’t any Griffin who has an address like the one she gave. I looked in the City Directory, and got the same result. There are a lot of Griffins, but I don’t find any Eva Griffin. And I don’t find any at her address.”
“What was the address?” asked Mason.
“2271 Grove Street,” she said.
Perry Mason made a notation on a slip of paper.
“I’ll see her,” he said.
“Okay,” said Della Street. “I just wanted you to know that she looks phony to me.”
Della Street was slim of figure, steady of eye; a young woman of approximately twenty-seven, who gave the impression of watching life with keenly appreciative eyes and seeing far below the surface.
She remained standing in the doorway eyeing Perry Mason with quiet insistence. “I wish,” she said, “that you’d find out who she really is before we do anything for her.”
“A hunch?” asked Perry Mason.
“You might call it that,” she said, smiling.
Perry Mason nodded. His face had not changed expression. Only his eyes had become warily watchful.
“All right, send her in, and I’ll take a look at her myself.”
Della Street closed the door as she went out, keeping a hand on the knob, however. Within a few seconds, the knob turned the door opened, and a woman walked into the room with an air of easy assurance.
She was in her early thirties, or perhaps, her late twenties – well groomed, and giving an appearance of being exceedingly well cared for. She flashed a swiftly appraising glance about the office before she looked at the man seated behind the desk.

BIG BILL RYAN slid his huge bulk into the vacant chair opposite my own and began toying with the heavy watch chain which stretched across the broad expanse of his vest.
“Well,” I asked, showing only mild annoyance, for Big Ryan had the reputation of never wasting time, his own or anyone else’s.
“Ed, I hear you’ve gone broke. I’ve got a job for you.”
He spoke in his habitual, thin, reedy voice. In spite of his bulk his mouth was narrow and his tone shrill. However, I fancied I could detect a quiver of excitement underlying his words, and I became cold. News travels fast in the underworld. He knew of my financial setback as soon as I did, almost. My brokers had learned my identity—that I was a crook, and they had merely appropriated my funds. They were reputable business men. I was a crook. If I made complaint the courts would laugh at me. I’ve had similar experiences before. No matter how honest a man may appear he’ll always steal from a crook—not from any ethical reasons, but because he feels he can get away with it.
“What’s on your mind?” I asked Ryan, not affirming or denying the rumor concerning my financial affairs.
His pudgy fingers seemed to be fairly alive as he twisted and untwisted the massive gold chain.
“It’s just a message,” he said, at length, and handed me a folded slip of paper.
I looked it over. It was a high class of stationery, delicately perfumed, bearing a few words in feminine handwriting which was as perfect and characterless as copper plate. Two hours after you get this message meet me at Apartment 624, Reedar Arms Apartments. The door will be open.
H. M. H. I scowled over at Ryan and shook my head. “I’ve walked into all the traps I intend to, Ryan.”
His little, pig eyes blinked rapidly and his fingers jammed his watch chain into a hard knot.
“The message is on the square, Ed. I can vouch for that. What the job will be that opens up I can’t tell. You’ll have to take the responsibility of that; but there won’t be any police trap in that apartment.”
I looked at the note again. The ink was dark. Evidently the words had been written some little time ago. The message did not purport to be to anyone in particular. Big Ryan was a notorious fence, a go-between of crooks. Apparently he had been given the note with the understanding that he was to pick out the one to whom it was to be delivered. The note would clear his skirts, yet he must be in on the game. He’d have to get in touch with the writer after he made a delivery of the note so that the time of the appointment would be known.
I reached a decision on impulse, and determined to put Ryan to the test. “All right, I’ll be there.”
I could see a look of intense relief come over his fat face. He couldn’t keep back the words. “Bully for you, Ed Jenkins!” he shrilled. “After I heard you were broke I thought I might get you. You’re the one man who could do it. Remember, two hours from now,” and, with the words, he pulled out his turnip watch and carefully checked the time. Then he heaved up from the chair and waddled toward the back of the restaurant.
I smiled to myself. He was going to telephone “H. M. H.” and I filed that fact away for future reference.

У автора того релиза, к сожалению, не было возможности заняться обновлением, выпуск нового релиза мной с автором прошлого релиза был согласован.
Отличия:
1. Тексты цикла "Перри Мейсон" здесь заметно лучше. Источник с более качественными текстами нашел parkher. Он же проделал немалую работу по дальнейшему улучшению качества. Ну и я, тоже, поисправлял немало
2. Добавлены несколько произведений НЕ про Перри Мейсона. В дальнейшем в релиз будет добавлен цикл Cool & Lam, пока там еще порядочно работы по доведению до читабельного состояния.

Ну и замена нескольких книг OCR на eBook Cool & Lam обошлись мне недешево - два с половиной месяца ушло на приведение файлов в читабельный вид ...
В двух книгах были пропуски текста, по несколько страниц. Для удобства русскочитающих пользователей в соответствующих местах вставлены куски из русских переводов. Нить повествования не потеряете, по крайней мере
Еще в нескольких местах текст был настолько испорчен при распознавании, что воссоздать его не представлялось возможным. В этих местах также добавлен текст из русских переводов. Обычно это всего несколько слов, да и мест таких немного ...

Perry Mason books are readable. Several of Cool & Lam books are in poor conditions. If you can find them - if would be helpful
Well, "The case of the reluctant model" has the last few pages missing. And I remember reading something else from Perry Mason series and it looked like there were some gaps, at least in the logic. I thought that might have been some missing paragraphs or something like that. Also in a quite a few cases there're some minor typos, clearly caused by a scanner; not a big deal, of course, but still a bit annoying. I guess I'm going to start with the reluctant model, that is, I"ll get the book, scan it, that would give me a PDF file, and then hopefully I can convert it to epub format and then we'll figure out how can I send it to you. Meanwhile, if you please let me know which ones from Cool & Lam you're interested in, I'd check if I can get them from the library. Thanks, PPJr.

When we were talking about the old Action Detective magazine I forgot to tell you that I learned to write a novelette on one of yours about a man named Rex Kane, who was an alter ego of Ed Jenkins and got mixed up with some flowery dame in a hilltop house in Hollywood who was running an anti-blackmail organization. You wouldn't remember. It's probably in your file No. 54276-84. The idea, probably not at all original, to me was so good that I simply made an extremely detailed synopsis of your story and from that rewrote it and then compared what I had with yours, and then went back and rewrote it some more, and so on. It looked pretty good. Incidentally, I found out that the trickiest part of your technique was the ability to put over situations which verged on the implausible but which in the reading seemed quite real. I hope you understand that I mean this as a compliment. I have never come even near to doing it myself. Dumas had this quality in a very strong degree. Also Dickens. It's probably the fundamental of all rapid work, because naturally rapid work has a large measure of improvisation, and to make an improvised scene seem inevitable is quite a trick. At least I think so.
And here I am at 2.40 a.m. writing about technique, in spite of a strong conviction that the moment a man begins to talk about technique, that's proof he is fresh out of ideas.
Дело Пламенеющего Пальца впечатлило. Не столько сюжетными наворотами, сколько общим ощущением картины.
Такое чувство, что Гарднер решил описать анти-Мейсона и анти-Деллу в лице антогонистов.
И ещё, кажется автор решил показать гипотетическую возможность, когда Мейсон защищает очевидного преступника.
Хотя и здесь Мейсон оказался на стороне "добра" но ощущение, что он может запросто оказаться адвокатом дьявола было очень сильное.
