Yiorgos Maggas is the most important contemporary Greek gypsy clarinetist. His unique interpretation of Balkan folk music, along with a technique based on slides, abrupt changes in sound and use of complex scales over a modal harmonic background, have made him extremely popular all over Greece and triggered the audiences’ admiration in festivals all around Europe, Latin America and Canada.
This album is selected from a two-hour bash in the studios, so in many ways it represents the antithesis of today’s productions, which often take weeks in recording. Maggas improvises in his wild and spontaneous style using a predetermined scale of notes chosen for each piece depending on its emotional weight. He excels at the art of playing the taxim, that is unveiling the chosen mode in a very personal way, in order to set the mood for the dance piece to follow. He plays among some of the finest musicians, most of them accomplished as solists. A passionate album by the single most significant gipsy clarinet solist in Greece.
