Об исполнителе (группе)
Raices Habaneras is a house band for the Afro-Cuban folklore parties (peñas) at La Esquina Habanera club (Union City, NJ, also called “Habana on the Hudson” due to its large Cuban diaspora), which are held since 1996 by club’s owner Tony Sequiera. This band of mostly Cuban expatriates is led by guitarist, singer and percussionist David Oquendo whose guitar can be heard on few albums by Paquito D’Rivera. Group’s pillars include Pedro Pablo Martínez “Pedrito”, percussionist-in-demand for modern US Latin jazz scene and Yoruba singer, who changed his native Habana for US in 2000; Gene Golden, US-born percussionist, former disciple and collaborator of the late Orlando Ríos “Puntilla”; drummer and percussionist Vicente Sánchez. Jazz fans might also be surprised to find Habana-born keyboardist Oriente López singing in coro. On this recording the group performs traditional Habana-style Cuban Rumba in all its varieties (guaguancó, yambú, columbia, jiribilla/tajona) and a couple of Afro-Cuban chants (Lukumí canto a Elegguá and an Abakuá). The album was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album.
