Об альбоме (сборнике)
Hyperpyrexia, according to medical dictionaries, is defined as an unusually high fever where the body’s core temperature is raised higher than it can handle, resulting in heatstroke. It can be triggered from long exposure to direct sunlight, from side effects of various controlled substances, or by standing too close to your speakers while listening to the Theodore Ziras album of the same name. Easily one of the more exciting instrumental albums of the last few years, “Hyperpyrexia” is a stunning display of composition and chops that is sure to satiate the appetites of even the hungriest guitar enthusiasts.
Admittedly, I was quite skeptical of this album’s worth. Instrumental albums generally suffer from a series of limitations not at all associated with the skill of the musicians involved, such as lack of variety, masturbatory showboating, and expressionless precision, all of which a decent vocalist and a little restraint would go a long way towards rectifying. Armed with these presumptions like a warrior off to battle, I was immediately floored by opening cut “Child Of Scotland.” Talk about putting his best foot forward, this song is the instant highlight of the album. Ziras’ playing is extraordinary: his technique is fluid, harmonious, and incredibly catchy. And he doesn’t sacrifice his incredible speed or heavy guitar tone to accomplish it. I had expected a lizard, but was met with a dragon.
The momentum of the insurmountable first track rides on through the rest of the album, where Theodore Ziras further displays his ability to decimate the listener with his immense brand of progressive, neoclassical guitarwork. He plays both the guitar and the bass, enlisting ex-Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian for the insane keyboard solos and Brian Tichy for the percussive accompaniment. Tracks like “Such And Such” and “Rapid Eye Movement” dominate the up-tempo territory, but none of the songs could really be considered mellow or atmospheric. The tempo does vary a bit, but don’t expect anything short of instrumental metal on this one.
Only downside is that the back half of the album doesn’t quite stand up to the first half. While songs like “Night Of The Dead” and “Go East” are still potent, “Hyperpyrexia” starts so strong that they seem worlds beneath the first three tracks. Regardless, it’s a killer album from Theodore Ziras; undoubtedly Greece’s most impressive guitar hero.
