From what I have heard of Brazilian prog metal bands, and there are many of them, Ivory Gates is definitely among the better ones. Although the CD is full of good music that should appeal to most progressive metal fans, they still have a little to go before they can compete with the best within the genre. Having that said, Ivory Gates has released a strong CD that is well worth checking out and for a debut, "Shapes Of Memory" boils over with potential.

Finalmente saiu o 2º álbum da banda Ivory Gates, direto de Piracicaba (interior paulista). A banda Ivory Gates nos mostra nesse novo disco um grande trabalho de grupo, sim um grupo muito bem ensaiado, pronto para vôos mais altos e agora com uma gravadora forte para divulgar o seu trabalho, isso finalmente poderá acontecer. Devo dizer que, o que vemos aqui, é um trabalho sério, profissional e extrema qualidade em sua gravação e execução. Uma autêntica aula de como se faz metal de verdade. Um prog metal com toques de melódico e muita coisa de tradicional. Eu não acho pontos a serem igualados a nomes da cena mundial, mas posso dizer que temos como colocar o instrumental dentro de nomes como Rush, Dream Theater com toda a certeza, e falar o que do vocal de Malagueta?? Ele veio da extinta FreeHand - na qual gravou o debut também - e veio mostrar nesse trabalho, algo que me surpreendeu muito. O seu trabalho vocal está excelente, ainda lembra em alguns momentos algo de Bruce Dickinson como em sua antiga banda, mas não entenda isso como algo negativo, pelo contrário é uma excelente referência, ainda mais, pois hoje lê soube colocar em seu estilo algo próprio dosando o que aprendeu ouvindo Mr. Bruce. Eu já acompanho o trabalho há mais de 10 anos e sei que ele evoluiu muito desde sua iniciação no microfone, ele está de parabéns. Mas devemos ressaltar que o trabalho instrumental de uma banda excelente como essa, levada por Fabrício Feliz - bateria, Matheus Armelin - guitarra e Hugo Mazzotti - baixo e violoncelo. Como dito, temos aqui incursões de violoncelo nas músicas o que dá mais um toque de originalidade para a Ivory Gates. As letras foram baseadas no livro "1984" de George Orwell, uma excelente trabalho nesse quesito também. Se você depois de ler tudo isso ainda quiser destaques, tudo bem, toma aqui então ( mesmo achando que não precisa ): "System Of Power", "Kill The Giant" e "Closed Eyes" que fecha com chave de ouro este trabalho magnífico. Se algo faltava para a Ivory Gates decolar, acho que agora não falta mais nada. A nota, não chegou ao máximo, só porque merecíamos ao menos mais umas duas músicas nesse álbum. Se você quer trabalho de qualidade e bem executado não pense duas vezes, esse é o cd!!

On "The Devil's Dance", they thus display all the virtues of progressive metal, but their compositions are hugely melodic and generally very pleasant to listen to, and most of the track on the album - ranging from the 5 minutes groovy classic metal-oriented title track to the 21+ minutes epic track "Suite Memory" have just as much feel to them as they do technicality and complexity. The album rocks hard in several places, and Ivory Gates also understand the power of guitar harmonies which they use in several places to great effect (just check the firt passage of "Endless Nightmare" and the main theme of "Serpent's Kiss". We are dealing with very good progressive metal, indeed, and the musicianship is pretty much impeccable. Drawing on traditional metal as well as power metal, Ivory Gates make sure that their music remains solid at all times. I like the quality of the vocals, which include fluid, but essentially quite simple and captivating, vocal lines. Fans of progressive metal, and Fates Warning specifically (let it be known that, we are not dealing with an FW rip off here - it is just that Ivory Gates are not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves) should definitely check this release out. It's progressive and sophisticated, but it rocks hard and is quite accessible. MetalMusicArchives

Ivory Gates was formed back in 2000 by bassist Hugo Mazzotti (ex-Mystical Warning) and guitarist Matheus Armelin (Freehand). After writing the majority of "Shapes Of Memory", they hooked up with drummer Fabricio Felix and brought in vocalists Miguel Puppin and Veruska Camillo to complete the line-up. Two vocalists you say? Yes, that is correct. This band is actually fronted by a male and female singer. This is quite common in the Goth genre, but in this case we are talking progressive metal in the vein of Fates Warning, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Rush etc. With two singers to front a prog metal band, Ivory Gates immediately caught my interest. For the most part both vocalists stay in the mid-to-high register and they do a good job. Even the duets between them work very well. It is Miguel Puppin (the male singer if you couldn't tell) that sings lead and whilst he delivers a solid performance, he occasionally sounds a bit strained reaching for the really high notes. But this is just me quibbling and it only happens a couple of times, so it should not bother you too much. The music flips between mid-paced songs and a couple more darker, slow paced songs. The song-writing and instrumentation is of a high standard and out of the 7 tracks on offer, only one fails to attract me. Most songs work great with lots of interesting themes, variation and strong melody-lines. The production is pretty good, but lacks a sparkle to top it all off.
