Jarrell is the real deal when it comes to country music. A mainstay of the Nashville studio scene for years, J.D. was even a member of Loretta Lynn's studio stable for 6 years. His catalog is brimming with lessons on country songs, string bending, bluegrass rhythm, hybrid picking, using the b-bender, double stops, boom-chick strumming, and much, much more! BIO: J.D. started playing on an orange Roy Rogers guitar at a very young age, graduating at age 12 to a $20 K-Mart special. He learned his first chords and strumming patterns from his father, and taught himself from there, learning tips and tricks from every possible source. According to J.D., the most important lesson he's learned about guitar is when to play, and when not to play. Today, J.D. is a top country and bluegrass musician, having performed with luminaries like Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Tony Rice Unit, Bela Fleck, and Doc and Merle Watson. A long-time session player, J.D. was a house musician for Songshack Music, Loretta Lynn's studio, for six years. J.D.'s influences aren't limited to country and bluegrass, however- he is also into blues, rock, rockabilly, western swing, and jazz. Along with guitar, he also plays mandolin, bass guitar, tenor banjo, and dulcimer. Beyond that, if it has strings and frets, he'll attempt to play it. An instructor at Guitar Tricks since 2004, J.D. also teaches privately. He covers a lot of terrain in his lessons, from country and bluegrass tips to hybrid and flat picking techniques to bending styles to strumming approaches, and much more. Hello, I'm J.D. and I want to thank everyone for the messages, and compliments you've been posting. I'm glad you're enjoying the lessons, and finding them useful as well. I'm into year number seven as a GT instructor now, and I'm still in the process of reshooting old lessons. I still have multiple views, but I started putting the explanation at the end of the video. I realize a more advanced player wouldn't want to sit through all of that, but for those of you that want a thorough explanation of how to pick it, it's there. If you find a lesson that doesn't have video yet, and you would like to have one added. Post a message for me, and I'll put it at the top of my list. I love telecasters, string bending, chicken picking, hybrid picking, and also flat-picking. I played bluegrass professionally for 17 years before getting my first telecaster, but have always listened to a variety of music. After moving to Nashville in 1985 I also started playing country, rockabilly, classic rock, blues and even some western swing. Now I play lead, and sing with my band "Outlaw Attitude" in southeast Arizona. We play mostly country, classic rock, some blues, and a few originals too. I also play with a group of area allstars called "Mix Company" and we play any request we get. I use a flat pick, and also play a hybrid style using two fingers with a pick. If you're wondering how to get started with hybrid picking, be sure to check out the Basic hybrid picking exercises tutorial. If you're already familiar wth hybrid picking, there are many useful riffs in the Introduction to hybrid picking tutorial. If you want to pick like the boys in Nashville, this will help you figure out some of the tricks they use. If you want start bending strings, the String bending tutorial has tips, and 16 bending positions on the B string. There are more new lessons coming soon, and more HD reshoots too. I've been reshooting the Double stops tutorial first by special request, and even added HD video to some lessons that before only had an mp3. Stay tuned, no pun intended, for more on hybrid picking, string bending, and double stops too. I performed around Nashville, and on the road for 23 years. I've worked with many different artists, songwriters, and groups as a lead player, and back up vocalist. I've played shows with Jess McEntire, Becky Hobbs, Shawn Camp, Wade Hayes, Ken Mellons, Forrest Lee Jr., Almost Brothers, Tennessee Thunder Band, Tequilia Rose, Knighthawk, Micah Arnold, Troy Lee Combs, Brandon Giles, Lloyd Knight, Scott Lindsey, and too many more to mention. I moved out to Bisbee, Arizona in 2007 with my family, and play somewhere most every weekend. The rest of the time I make guitar videos, write songs, or just pick. I have listened to so many guitar players, it would take too much space to name them all. My first musical influence was my Dad, then Doc, and Merle Watson, Roy Clark, Marty Stuart, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Jerry Reed, James Burton, Roy Nichols, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Ray Flacke, Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert, Johnny Hiland, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, of course my buddies Eugene Moles, Forrest Lee Jr., and anyone I ever stood next to in a jam session.
