Монти Александер (Montgomery Bernard ‘Monty’ Alexander) - джазовый пианист и композитор. Родился 6 июня 1944 года в Кингстоне, Ямайка. Учиться музыке начал с четырех лет, за фортепиано впервые сел в девять. Услышав однажды Луи Армстронга, решил отдать предпочтение джазу. На родине дебютировал в группах ритм-энд-блюза, набрался опыта в танцевальных оркестрах, культивировавших стиль "калипсо". Переехав в США в 1961, поселился в Майами, где играл в местных клубах с различными ансамблями. Впервые записался с соул-фанки-оркестром Леса Мак-Кэнна (1963), первая сольная пластинка (1965) вышла под амбициозным названием "Alexander The Great" (Александр Великий). С 1967 обосновался в Нью-Йорке, концертировал здесь как клубный пианист (иногда как органист), сделал ряд записей с комбо барабанщика Джимми Кобба, басиста Рэя Брауна, вибрафониста Милта Джексона. В дальнейшем организовал собственное трио (в 1974), руководил также квинтетом. Гастролировал в Европе и Латинской Америке. Сотрудничал с популярным на Ямайке гитаристом Эрнестом Рэнглином (Ernest Ranglin). Кумир Монти Оскар Питерсон помог ему записать несколько альбомов. Наибольшей известности достиг после 1979, выступив в Карнеги-холле в ансамбле звезд американского джаза.
Музыкант с блестящей техникой, динамичный и темпераментный. Продолжил традиции виртуозного пианизма Арта Тэйтума, Эрролла Гарнера и Оскара Питерсона. Студийной работе всегда предпочитал живое исполнение, в котором особенно ярко раскрыл свои талант и мастерство, умение находить контакт с аудиторией. При записи пластинок стремился к предельной точности и аккуратности. Эпизодически экспериментировал с этническими музыкальными инструментами и звуковыми эффектами, связанными с фольклором Вест-Индии, прежде всего Карибского региона и Ямайки (стилем реггей). В некоторых своих альбомах конца 1980-х гг. (Ivory And Steel, Jamboree) объединил джазовое комбо и так называемый steel band (популярный на карибских островах оркестр, состоящий из металлических шумовых инструментов).
