Об исполнителе (группе)
Hailing from Eugene, Oregon, USA, Schizophrenic multi-medium artist and 24/7 thought broadcaster, J.D. Casten, born in 1968, has been listening to background music almost constantly since 1993, in order to drown out the voices he hears in his head. Having undergone extensive treatment for his condition, including repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation experiments at Yale, he recaptured some of his creative time, and besides creating art and poetry, tried his hand at playing guitar, keyboards, and DJ looping, to create the sounds of the albums “American Power Projection” and “Melody Method” under his moniker “The Rhythm Messiahs.” J.D. comes from a computer programming background, having published Atari computer games in the 1980s, and has turned to computers again to help realize his artistic aspirations, both visually and musically. Counting many artists and bands as influences, from DJ Shadow and Odd Nosdam to Radiohead and Boards of Canada, J.D. has forged his own style of mid-tempo trip-hop with a wide spectrum of moods, from the fun-funky “Super Sly Fly” on the album “Melody Method” to the darker, somewhat spooky, “Slow To Sleep” from “American Power Projection.” In 2009, J.D. established Post Egoism Media, in order to make books, art and music from talented digital artists available in material formats and freely available on the web. Although almost always on a “conference call” in his head, J.D. manages to steal time from the torment and often torture of auditory and tactile hallucinations to create digital images manipulated from his original photography (he creates all The Rhythm Messiahs’ album art), and digital music, using ACID Pro 7, Native Instruments Komplete 5 & 6 + Kore 2, and various other instruments, effects, and loops. When not busy making art, he is promoting the work of others, and may eventually find some time to relax. J.D.’s two books, The Rhythm of the Chill, and Post-Digital Revelation, can also be found via the Post Egoism Media web site. J.D. has an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Oregon, and also studied literature while in college; his academic foci are the History of Philosophy, Cognitive Science, and the 20th century philosopher, Jacques Derrida; and he is currently working on an academic book tentatively called Deconstructing Artificial Intelligence. More press material on The Rhythm Messiahs and the album "Daymare" can be seen by clicking here. The 2010 album “Daymare” revolves around the concept of a “day of songs” or “songs of a day” - each of the 24 songs roughly paralleling events of a 24 hour period, from early morning, on into evening, and right through into dreamland, and out the other side into the next day. J.D. had the help of many friends on “Daymare” - Thanks to: Ana Voog and Lili Zuzu Voog for use of daughter Lili’s recorded laughter on “Belly Laugh Breakfast” • Frank Hanson for electric bass & guitar samples + FX recordings on “Coffin Break” • Chris Keegan for additional percussions on “Coffin Break” • The late Genesis “Gigi” Casten for inspiration on “Ghost In The Clock” • JJ “Avitar” Walker for MPC beats on “Untitled Without Words” • Ben “Monk Metz” Metzger for rap vocals and lyrics on “Solitary Solidarity Sermon” • Rick Stasel for electric bass and slowed train recording on “Short Wait On A Slow Train” • Rex Hungerford for blues guitar on “Dinner And A Movie” • Nelda Casten for vocals on “Twilight Falling” • Brenden “nerBeater” MacDonald for synth/MIDI samples on “Three Crazy Words” • Kirk Schreiter for vocals and (rearranged) words on “Underworld In The Sky” • Eric Richardson for jazz upright bass on “Busted Robot Nightmare” • Matthew “DJ Tigerstripes” Kenneth for beat-matched edits of Jerry Harrison’s “Worlds In Collision” on “Lucid Dreamer Tail Chaser” • Nick “Momus” Currie for use of (re-contextualized) vocals on “Wet Signals Ophelia” • Bruce Allen Bayard for bass drone on “Sudden Daybreak Awakening” • and Cody Casten for a synth line on “Daydream Moment Of Clarity.”
Об альбоме (сборнике)
The Rhythm Messiahs' second album, Melody Method, navigates new territory with a sound that has evolved, being more accessible, yet remaining strange to the ear. The instrumental songs chart the stages on life's way: from the jack in the box sounds of the funky first track, Super Sly Fly, and an instructor's cheerleading chant on Go Do Go, to the daydreaming pianos on Love at First Sigh, and the round of applause concluding Dead Air's somber, deep bass lines; the album matures as it progresses, yet all the songs here should appeal to music lovers of all ages. Although a genre bender, the music here remains indebted to the history of trip-hop, being a mid-tempo, high-volume version of that traditionally laidback music.
