RYA Navigation Handbook (англ.) Navigation is both a science and an art. The science gives the navigator a position and an array of other data about the present and predicted conditions. The art is deciding what to do with this information. Under way, experienced yacht navigators appear to be doing very little. In fact, they will have worked hard at the pre-planning and they are thinking ahead and considering the next move. This book provides the knowledge needed by the modern small boat navigator. While the principles of navigation have remained the same for hundreds of years the methods have changed and this new book includes techniques for electronic navigation as well as traditional methods. Tim Bartlett is an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor, journalist and author with a lifetime's experience as a practical yacht navigator. His clear text provides the knowledge to give you many years of enjoyable sailing or motor cruising. Whether you are studying navigation as part of an RYA course or just want to know more about the art of navigation, this book is highly recommended. Navigation techniques and practices have changed dramatically over the past ten years or so; GPS and electronic chart plotters, in particular, now offer unprecedented levels of accuracy and reliability. The RYA has adapted its Dayskipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster courses to reflect the fact that many sailors and motor boaters now regard electronic instruments as their principal means of navigation. However, traditional methods still have an important part to play and this book covers them both, giving equal weight to electronic and traditional methods, and to the needs of power and sail. Author Tim Bartlett is one of the country's leading experts on navigation. He has been sailing since he was a young boy and learnt to navigate as part of his professional training at Dartmouth Naval College. After leaving the Navy, Tim qualified as a Yachtmaster Instructor, and worked as a professional yacht skipper and sailing instructor before taking up the post of Technical Editor of Motor Boat and Yachting magazine. He is now a freelance writer and trainer.
