Jon DeRosa writes, “I'd never written music for film specifically, but it's something I've always wanted to do. I tend to be comfortable in the "background" of music, as opposed to the foreground...atmosphere over melody, and creating a piece with repetition and build, texture, layering, as opposed to formal song structure. But in this project I knew there'd
have to be melodic and thematic elements as well. I was also working
outside of my element instrument-wise as well, using keyboards and
strings as opposed to guitars for the basis of most of the pieces.
I began with musical phrases...piano sketches, cello melodies, guitar
sounds...and built on them, as I would have for an Aarktica album,
however I was much more mindful of running melodic themes, trying to
give each character his/her own tone, as well as the atmospheres. I
just tried to write pieces that complimented Leah's characters and
themes, and hopefully I accomplished that.”
