If you are part of the metal scene for quite some years it goes without saying that you have made a lot of friends during that time. This especially applies to band members from Exodus, Laaz Rockit and Testament. All bands have been active for more then twenty years now, the come from the same area, lived their heydays at the same time and became good friends through the years. And you know what happens when musicians become close friends? Right, the dive into a studio together in the hope to produce something useful. In this case it were Testament’s Chuck Billy and former Exodus vocalist Steve ‘Zetro’ Souza who together with the likes of Willy Lange (Laaz Rockit) and guitarist Phil Demmel (Machine Head, Vio-Lence, Death Penalty) booked some studio time to put some cool tunes to disc. Now of course these names put together do create some high expectations, for these guys where partly responsible for some of the most legendary thrash albums from the 80’s (and if I have to explain this your basic metal knowledge is pretty poor). On the other hand my expectations aren’t that high, just because of the fact that these guys where top of the bill in an era that thrash was something completely new. Nowadays this musical niche has been around for more than twenty years, so the novelty is kind off gone, if you know what I mean. Pretty though therefore to produce something legendary again… So what is left after shedding the 80’s skin and looking at ‘DDP 4 Life’ with a 2007 view? Well, still quite a cool album really. I mean, these dudes do carry one major advantage, and that is the fact that together they have about 500 years of experience in this kind of metal. That does not only show in the production (which is awesome, the perfect thrash sound), but it shows throughout the whole album. Using double vocals from Steve and Chuck in each song proved to be a great idea. This combination of grunt and scream may sound a bit odd within thrash, but sounds quite cool actually. The instrumental parts are more than adequate of course. Very tight, but never far from the groove and plenty of room for every Bay Area thrash trick in the book. The only thing I kind of miss in the tracklist are speed demons like ‘C.O.T.L.O.D.’, ‘Raging Waters’ or ‘Parasite’, but taking the enormous amount of shown craftsmanship in account I can live with this lack of real heavy fast shit. Too bad therefore that the band decided to end the CD with some Indian chanting and drumming. Yeah yeah, I know Chuck’s an Indian, but putting more than seven minutes of such on a thrash album is kind of superfluous. A pleasant surprise however is the presence of the super classics ‘Iron Fist’ (Motцrhead), ‘Lights Out’ (UFO) and ‘Cold Sweat’ (Thin Lizzy). This beautifully illustrates where these guys – who are still an inspiration for countless others – loved to listened to when they were young themselves. With all this in mind it is not so hard to come up with a conclusion. Like I said before these veterans glory days are twenty years behind us, and in spite of all the good intentions ‘DDP 4 Life’ will most probably never reach the same status as the 80’s classics. Is that a bad thing? No, not particularly, for it was really a relief to hear some really old school thrash again between de daily overload of modern metal I find on my desk every day. I sincerely doubt that this album will appeal to the new generation of metal fans, but it is a must have for you Bay Area thrash fans out there. (c) lordsofmetal.nl
