He is one of these off the beaten track composers who have a particular taste for the unknown without falling into a fussy exuberance. With a remarkable discretion, Daniel Goyone upsets references and invents his own language: “When I compose,” he explains, “I always try to free myself from all harmonic and rhythmic structures which are usually used. I use different systems in order to create a constant ambiguity giving the impression that we are simultaneously in a major and in a minor key, while we are actually in none of them .Regarding the rhythm, I use a lot of harmonic rhythms. In fact, I spend my time putting rhythm into harmony and harmony into rhythm”. When this work has been completed, it is time for ideas. Intuition plays here its part. “Intuition is as important as reflection”. Those who would consider this musician only in relation with his rapid and uncertain experimentations and forbidding theories –Daniel Goyone wrote several theoretical reference books – would make a serious mistake. They would actually miss the so delectable pleasure of enjoying a transparent and crystal-clear music. Since the writing complexity gives a subtle elegance, a delicate freshness to compositions, which straightaway capture the ear. “I particularly make sure that the technical work is not perceptible. And I am often surprised to hear that some musicians, when playing my music, find it easy whereas it upsets all kinds of habits and automatisms”.
Before embarking upon his experimentations, Daniel Goyone started his career playing in balls and making progresses with each new encounter. He then accompanied Georges Moustaki, Nicole Croisille and Claude Nougaro. From jazz to African music, jazz-rock and Brazilian music, he crossed all kinds of music worlds. At the beginning of the 80’s, he started to devote himself to his passion for composition. “One day”, he remembers, “although I had already composed a few things, I had the impression of having discovered something different with a piece I was writing. It was a highly intimate sensation. I understood at that moment that my life was toppling over.” Daniel Goyone started then to play live and in studio with his own band. Five albums will be recorded. He takes sophisticated musicians dragged by the same passion for challenges and inventions. Some of them will follow him for many years: Marc Bertaux, for instance, a rigorous and accurate bassist he met in 1978; also Trilok Gurtu, drummer born in Bombay, who can cleverly mix up jazz and Indian music and regularly plays with him since 1985.
Moved by the same acoustic quality requirement, their music reaches you immediately. Clear and limpid, it is a jewel of inexpressible pleasure.
