GEORGE SHEARING
Since arriving in New York in 1946 from his native London, where he made his first recordings 50 years ago. George Shearing has generated an international following Like one of his models, Teddy Wilson, and his contemporary Erroll Garner, Shearing (b. 1919) fashioned an immensely attractive keyboard style that never flaunts its technique. His trademarks — flowing single-note lines interspersed with chiming block chords (the so-called "locked hands" technique borrowed from organist Milt Buckner) — helped make bop less foreboding to the wider audience. Shearing's sleek quintets were, for nearly three decades, among jazz's most popular groups, thanks in no small part to their shimmering piano-vibes-guitar unisons and the leader's tuneful originals like "Conception," "Bop, Look And Listen," "Changing With The Times." and, of course, the huge hit "Lullaby Of Birdland."
"Lullaby," appropriately enough, is our lead-off number, heard in a percolating 1974 sextet rendition (Shearing helped further popularize Latin-jazz when he added percussion in 1953). But the bulk of the program is comprised of trios and quartets, notably the four trio performances with Shearing's fellow Briton, guitarist Louis Stewart, and the incomparable Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. and the four quartets featuring Stephane Grappelli. The tracks with the sempiternal French violinist make for the happiest sort of reunion, as Grappelli s and Shearing's collaborations date to 1942 in London, to which Grappelli had fled from Nazi-occupied France.
Then there are the four piano solos, which display Shearing's brilliant palate of harmonic colors. Mel Torme. who in recent years has worked extensively with the pianist (and has won Grammys with him) says this about his friend and partner; "He is a blissful, constant surprise musically. He's got a marvelous facility for inventing substitute chords in great songs. A lot of pianists use substitute chords simply to call attention to themselves, but George does it to enhance and embellish the song. Add to that the incredible warehouse in his brain of classical music and of popular songs that no one else has ever heard of. I call George the Master."
