Доп. информация:
Although Edward "Duke" Ellington learned to play the piano at the age of seven, music was not a major part of his life until he was well into his teenage years, pursuing commercial art at high school. That was until he heard pianist Harvey Brooks in Washington; seeking Brooks out in Philadelphia, Duke got him to show and teach him some piano tricks and shortcuts and thus began a love affair with music that was to last more than fifty years.
Taken under the wings of Oliver Perry and Louis Brown, Duke learned to read music and improved his all round piano playing skills. He subsequently found regular work in the clubs and cafes of Washington, eventually forming his own band (and handling his own bookings), working a large variety of society balls and embassy parties in and around the area.
Duke moved to New York in 1923, already a well known personality in the area thanks to the medium of radio and soon became an almost permanent fixture at numerous clubs, including the prestigious Cotton Club. The nationwide broadcast of "From the Cotton Club" helped Duke and his band become national celebrities and, over the years, extended that popularity worldwide with tours and performances everywhere from New Delhi, Cairo, London, Paris and elsewhere.
Whilst Duke Ellington's abilities as a live performer would have made him an important figure in the world of music, his talents as a songwriter exceeded almost everything. His work was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Ella Fitzgerald included an album of Duke Ellington songs in her prestigious and best-selling songbook series, whilst he was honoured by both France (who presented him the Legion of Honour medal in 1973) and his own homeland, where he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969.
Whether composing for members of his band (Duke would often name pieces after the soloist who was to perform it live), for a film score or stage musical, Duke Ellington continued to gather nominations and awards like no one else, including eleven Grammy Awards, and performed regularly until illness overcame him in May 1974. The man who was subsequently honoured in song by Stevie Wonder may have been a loss to the world of commercial art, but he became a musician without equal.
