Natural Gas was an American hard rock and power pop supergroup formed in Los Angeles in 1975 by former members of prominent British rock bands Badfinger, Humble Pie, and Uriah Heep. The band released a single self-titled album in 1976 and disbanded in 1977. Today, the original vinyl pressing of this record is a rare and highly valuable find for rock music collectors worldwide.In 1975, following the effective dissolution of the British band Badfinger, guitarist Joey Molland relocated to Los Angeles. There, he teamed up with drummer Jerry Shirley, whose band Humble Pie had temporarily gone on hiatus. They were joined by bassist Mark Clarke (formerly of Uriah Heep and Colosseum) and keyboardist Peter Wood (Sutherland Brothers & Quiver). Due to the high profile of its members, the project immediately gained supergroup status.The band's initial manager was Mal Evans, the former road manager and assistant for The Beatles. However, in January 1976, shortly before the debut album recording sessions began, Evans was tragically killed in a police-involved shooting in Los Angeles. Production duties were taken over by Felix Pappalardi, renowned for his work with Cream and Mountain. Pappalardi shifted the band's sonic direction toward a more commercial arena rock sound.In the summer of 1976, the band's sole album, Natural Gas, was released on Private Stock Records. As part of the promotional campaign, the musicians secured an opening slot on Peter Frampton's massive American stadium tour. Despite their live success, the label's management failed to provide the record with adequate sales support and radio airplay. Internal conflicts over creative leadership subsequently arose between Molland, who had written the majority of the material, and the other members. Due to a lack of commercial success and ongoing internal disputes, the group disbanded in 1977, turning their only release into a genuine rarity. Joey Molland (vocal, lead guitar) — ex-Badfinger, Mark Clarke (bass, vocal) — ex-Uriah Heep, Colosseum, Jerry Shirley (drums) — ex-Humble Pie, Peter Wood (keyboards) — ex-Sutherland Brothers & Quiver. The 1976 full-length album Natural Gas remained the group's only official release.
