David Forman is an American singer, pianist, and singer-songwriter known for his work in the soft rock, piano rock, and blue-eyed soul genres. He gained recognition in the mid-1970s following the release of his critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful self-titled debut album. Forman was born in Brooklyn, New York. In the early 1970s, he immersed himself in soul music, developing his vocal style through his friendship and jam sessions with Aaron Neville. Music critic Stephen Holden helped shepherded a record deal for Forman with Clive Davis's major label, Arista Records. On May 25, 1976, Arista released his debut album, David Forman, produced by Joel Dorn. Rolling Stone magazine highly praised the release, placing Forman on the same artistic level as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Warren Zevon, while comparing his vocals to Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson. Despite critical acclaim, the album suffered from poor sales. In late summer 1977, Forman recorded his sophomore album, Who You Been Talking To, at the Sound Factory in Hollywood. The record was produced by Jack Nitzsche and featured legendary session musicians, including Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner. However, Arista Records head Clive Davis chose not to release the album, citing a lack of radio-friendly singles. Following this setback, Forman stepped away from the mainstream music industry and spent years writing commercial jingles. In January 2026, the independent label High Moon Records officially released the unissued 1977 album, sparking a resurgence of interest in Forman's career among music journalists.
