I will preface this by saying that I have only recently been getting into surround sound mixes, and I realize I don't own the target sound system they are trying to sell this for (Dolby Atmos), but I just want to know if I'm the only one who feels really disappointed with the 5.1 surround mix and if 7.1 really makes any difference. Just curious on other opinions.
Maybe it's a matter of ripping the individual tracks and hearing what each is doing, but from my ears upon my initial listen, I found that there weren't many specific tasks being held by one channel over another. Checking each speaker, the vocals and instruments were all about the same volume, and I didn't feel like I was really experiencing anything noticeably different than that of a stereo mix played via 5.1 (and yes, I *was* listening to the 5.1 mix and not stereo). I gave the binaural mix a bit of a listen out of curiosity and plan to give it a more proper listen later this week, but it seems to have a bit more width to it like I would've expected out of the surround mix.
I still need to re-listen to Point and Boris' Resonance on my new 5.1 system to see if this is a reoccurring issue among Yello releases. I would hope not, as Boris seems to pride himself off his audio engineering and mixing prowess. I guess I will have to update this post if I have any changes in opinion, as I gave Kraftwerk's new 5.1 surround mix of Autobahn recently, and that sounds a lot more dynamic to me. Even the Cure's Songs of a Lost World I felt had a really noticeable and dynamic mix,
and I'm just wondering what went wrong here?
I also want to mention that I'm extremely disappointed in this release missing out on the associated media of the original Touch Yello release in 2009. No videos from the Virtual Concert?
Just a couple poorly chosen screencaps from it to background each track? None of the bonus tracks from the Deluxe edition CD? They have plenty of space to add these on a Blu-Ray. Boris did it right with Resonance just a year ago with its associated videos. I would complain the same issues with Point... but, that release was a bit early on in the Blu-Ray trend that I can kind of forgive it...
