Harri Stojka, born Harald Wakar Stojka in Vienna in 1957, is a world-renowned musician. On and with the guitar, his instrument, Stojka is both a specialist and a universalist. In his eternally young, inspired and inspiring play with and around "time" in the most varied musical constellations, any artistic arbitrariness is alien to him.
Style and genre names, whose supposed boundaries (jazz, blues, rock, world, swing... you name it, Stojka played and plays it!) serve at most as orientation points or dialects of the one world language that Harri Stojka, who comes from a Lovara-Roma dynasty, uses with great curiosity, openness and great expression: music!
Over the decades, Stojka has recorded a discography that is simply impressive in its quality and artistic diversity, from early highlights such as "...Off The Bone" (1980, with the Harri Stojka Express) or "Live At Montreux" (1981) to the more recent works "Psycho Guitar" (2019) or "Salut to Jimi Hendrix" (2020).
The in-depth examination of Jimi Hendrix as a formative influence for Harri on the electric guitar, the independent reflection of his music in his own songs and Hendrix adaptations shaped the year 2022, in which Hendrix's 80th birthday was celebrated. The wonderfully loud and exuberant concerts in the trio still resonate into the not-so-new year of 2024, one of the many possibilities and aspects of Harri Stojka's music, who always pursues his muse in more than one way.
The discography continues to grow. In February 2023, the CD "Improvisation: Live", recorded together with Jatinder Thakur (tablas, percussions & voices), was released with a sparkling, instantaneous extended sound dialogue recorded in 2005 between the two exceptional instrumentalists. In spring 2023, there was the opportunity to hear with "Harri Stojka goes Standards" how the versatile musician took on classical songs on rhythm and lead guitar in 1999.
Another current focus of Harri Stojka's live work in 2024 is clearly the formation ACOUSTIC DRIVE together with his congenial partners Herbert Berger (sax), Peter Strutzenberger (bass) and Sigi Meier (drums). Here, Stojka style is traced to another of his important influences, Django Reinhardt and his musical universe, as a principle for which the guitarist succinctly outlines the approach of ACOUSTIC DRIVE as "modern jazz soloing with an acoustic gypsy sound".
What these words briefly characterize transcends the limitations of a pure tribute in the concert, Stojka & Co go to the fullest of their instrumental expressive possibilities, let their musicality not only speak through Reinhardt's material, but move just as dynamically with Harri Stojka's own compositions, the "drive" in the band name can be taken literally and quickly draws the audience under its spell.
