About
This is my favorite album of John Denver, with memorable songs and certainly their best versions. This is the case of "Sunshine on my shoulders" with his guitar and a bass, will come a later version that adds a very sweet string orchestra. Yes, I stay with this Denver: his guitar, a bass and an occasional piano.
Fran Solo, MMXIV
After several albums in which he had allowed cover versions to dominate the sets, John Denver returned with an album, Poems, Prayers & Promises, in which he had written over half the songs. He should have had more confidence in his own songs, for this was at the beginning of a golden period for Denver when his songs would dominate the easy listening airwaves, especially his big hit singles. "Take Me Home Country Roads" and his first U.S. number one, "Sunshine on My Shoulders," both surprisingly failed to reach the charts at all in the U.K.; however, the opening title track set the scene for the whole album, pleasant acoustic songs sung by Denver backed in most cases by the picking and strumming of his acoustic guitar. So it was rather surprising that the album ended with the track "The Box," a spoken poem with no music at all, relating a story similar to Pandora, of a box that was chained and locked and labeled "Kindly do not touch, it's war." When someone did break it open, a bouncy ball – a metaphor for war – escaped and ran amok, bumping into everything, particularly the children. And no one had the wisdom to put the ball back into the box and reseal it. Sounds as if it would be awful, but really it was quite moving. Poems, Prayers & Promises was actually released in 1971 but was reissued after Rocky Mountain High nearly reached the Top Ten in 1973, and it became his second Top 20 album. Of the covers, there were two from the Beatles: "Let It Be," an even simpler version than the original, and the rather less famous "Junk" from Paul McCartney's debut solo album. He also covered the James Taylor classic "Fire and Rain," which was rather unnecessary – for it was rather insipid compared to the version the public had become familiar with less than a year previously.

About
Released in 1973, Greatest Hits only sums up a handful of years of hitmaking for John Denver, but what years those were.
Between 1971 and 1973, Denver actually didn't have that many hits, but they were songs that defined him -- "Take Me Home, Country Roads," "Rocky Mountain High," and "Sunshine on My Shoulders." Those three songs, along with "Leaving on a Jet Plane" -- which he wrote but Peter, Paul & Mary made into a standard -- are all here, along with seven other early songs recorded between 1969 and 1973 that may not be familiar to the average casual fan, but all capture Denver's warm folk-pop at its best. There may be more hits on Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, but this collection is every bit as engaging as that record.

About
John Denver wasn't merely hot during the mid-'70s; he was omnipresent on radio, TV, and on-stage for anyone who'd have him. Certainly, few artists enjoyed more than one greatest-hits collection -- even if critics derided him as a granola-munching, tree-hugging folky who perennially smiled through life's hardships.
But the reality of Denver's music is more complicated; behind the lush orchestration and gentle fingerpicking lies a more somber, contemplative side. In this respect, "Fly Away"'s lament about city pressures could be considered his answer to the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." "Like a Sad Song" and "I'm Sorry" apologize to forsaken lovers. "Looking for Space" takes a similar tack, although coupled with a yearning to explore the world outside yourself -- a theme that likely struck a chord in many listeners. Of course, Denver's ecological commitment is never far away in "Welcome to My Morning (Farewell Andromeda)" and "Calypso," his salute to the late French undersea explorer Jacques Costeau. "Annie's Song" goes further by explicitly linking nature and sensuality, while "Back Home Again" and "Grandma's Feather Bed" celebrate the pleasures of home and hearth. Anyone who's ever expressed themselves could relate to "This Old Guitar," on which Denver casts a wistful yet unsparing look at how the instrument influenced his life. As a snapshot of Denver's best-loved hits, this collection surely does the job.
