(Mojo) What was your reaction to the Stones' cover of It's All Over Now by
your old group The Valentinos?
(Womack) Jealousy. It seemed like the same old story: white boy covers
black boy, black boy never gets heard. Suddenly it's like you don't even
have the *right* to sing it. But Sam Cooke put me straight. He said,
"Bobby, one day this is gonna be history. Them boys are coming whether you
want them to or not. They're gonna be huge, and you'll be glad - because
you'll be known as the writer whose song broke 'em in this country." And,
oh, I've seen it. They became good friends, and there's nothing they
wouldn't do for me if I were to ask them.
(Mojo) Did you catch up with the Stones on the recent tour?
(Womack) (snip) ...what really touched me is what they did for Don Covay. I
once asked Keith what it was about Don that Mick liked so much, and he
said, "That's who he's trying to sing like." When I went back and listened,
sure enough. Don had a stroke two years ago. He's virtually blind and
confined to a wheelchair. Well, the Stones bought him a specially outfitted
truck, with a lift and a computer. Everybody knows the Stones are a great
band, but I know them as some of the finest people I've ever met.
