Having established himself as a proper old fashioned reggae soundsystem over the years (homebuilt pa system !), it seems that amongst the bass heavy classics that feature in any respected playlist, the man behind mungo's hi-fi decided to have a go at crafting some of his own rhythms to drop in here and there. subsequently, this 12 track set covers all bases of the reggae groove, from old school 70s dub and
roots, all the way up to modern dancehall. naturally, as to be expected, i’m loving the authentic sounding 70s style far more than some of
the other styles, but there is no denying that this album is showing me the way when it comes to education in the arts of the new digitally enhanced mutants of the reggae beat. however, that’s just part of the story. you see as well as the head nodding summer beats, there are toasters, lots of them. each track features vocals, whether its the smooth lovers rock of marina p (the brilliant divorce a l’italienne), or the old chart topper himself, tippa irie (who is obviously back in demand given that his team up with the bug produced one of the tracks of the year in angry) on ruff mi tuff, via the sweet rasta vibes from kenny knots. if you have any love of the bass heavy dubbed up roots-n-reggae, but have no idea where to turn to hear where the genre is in 2008, then mungo’s hi-fi is the answer to all your problems.
