об альбоме

  1. "The most prominent of Ali Farka Touré's musical heirs" ------ The Wire
The legendary Malian desert blues artist Samba Touré, has returned with a new album "Baarakelaw" (The Workers) – the follow up to his highly-acclaimed 2021 album Binga. The album received ecstatic, career defining reviews and led to Samba being named the "Best Artist" of 2022 at Songlines magazine.
"Baarakelaw" is a vivid mix of traditional northern Malian Songhoy music, blues-rock tracks with psychedelic overtones, ballads and love songs. It weaves the sounds and styles Samba has loved and mastered during his more than three-decade musical journey. The songs deal with a central theme: the trials and tribulations of those who work street jobs in a dusty, bustling West African city like Bamako.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the end of 2023, Samba recorded "Baarakelaw" in Mali's capital city of Bamako. Making the album was particularly difficult because the recording took place at a time when the Malian energy crisis, which the country had been experiencing for over a year, was getting much worse. It had become impossible to work in a traditional studio, as none of them had generators and electricity was only available for a few hours a day. The power blackouts were totally random, and could be early in the morning, in the afternoon or in the middle of the night. Thus, whenever power was available, the musicians, who were constantly on call, gathered together as quickly as possible to continue recording at the home of Samba's manager.
Once recorded, the mixing and production was entrusted to Mark Mulholland (Tamikrest, Alba Griot Ensemble, Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra), who finished the job in France. Mulholland brought in an ensemble of musicians to add various sympathetic textures: additional guitars, banjo, harmonica, drums and synthesizers.
Each song is a tribute to those who work small, demanding jobs in a dusty, bustling West African city like Bamako: street water sellers, itinerant tailors, housekeepers employed by families. These jobs are essential factors of social cohesion in Mali (and elsewhere), demonstrating on a daily basis that in a difficult situation, everyone needs each other.

Songhai Music

  1. aka Songhay Music / Sonrai Music
The Songhai people of Mali descend from the ancient Songhai Empire which once ruled most of interior West Africa. Found mainly in northern Mali and western Niger, the Songhai have transmitted their traditions orally for centuries, remaining distinct from the Mandé peoples that overthrew their Empire. The most characteristic aspect of their music is the predominance of the minor pentatonic scale and a recognizable lute fingerpicking style accompanied by singing which differs from that of Mandé jelis. Like most West African Music, drumming and call-and-response are also part of the Songhai tradition. The mbaggu talking drum, also played by the Fula, is the main percussion instrument. A monochord fiddle called goje is shared by other traditions such as Dagomba Music and Hausa music. In some parts of Niger, the Songhai culture and music have been integrated with that of the Zarma people (a subgroup), being referred to as Zarma-Songhai, or alternatively Djerma-Songhai. Another Songhai subgroup is the Dendi, from southwestern Niger, which has been influenced by music from northern Nigeria.
During the last third of the 20th century, Songhai traditions have been combined with foreign genres. Toumani Diabaté, a famous Mande Music kora player, recorded two collaborative albums with Spanish Flamenco group Ketama in which he focused on traditional Songhai music. In addition, Ali Farka Touré and his son Vieux Farka Touré are the most renowned Songhai musicians of the late 20th century, both of which have been notably influenced by Blues. While Ali has blurred the lines between West African music and Acoustic Blues, combining multiple local traditions such as Mandinka, Bambara and Fula, Vieux has leaned towards a more contemporary and "electric" approach that fuses Blues Rock with his inherited Songhai tradition. In Niger, Mamar Kassey have become the most representative Songhai music group, releasing several albums on international record labels.
Tishoumaren

  1. aka Tichumaren / Desert Blues / Tuareg Blues / Ishumar Music
Tishoumaren, also known as desert blues or Tuareg blues, is a style of electric guitar-led North African music emerging from traditional Tuareg Music in the 1980s. It has grown in popularity since the formation of the Malian group Tinariwen and generally features a smaller line-up than more traditional styles of Tamasheq music. Other artists known to adopt the style include Group Inerane and Tartit.
