Don't be afraid to Groove Raphael Wressnig & Alex Schultz Despite his youthful age of just twenty- eight, organist Raphael Wressnig is already regarded worldwide. Wressnig has played and recorded with well known blues and jazz artists such as: Jim Mullen, Craig Handy, Sax Gordon, Enrico Crivellaro, Sugar Blue, Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Finis Tasby, and many others too numerous to mention. Also very noteworthy is the fact that Raph's previous release "In Between" was awarded "Best Jazz-Album Of The Year" by the critics of the Concerto music magazine and he was awarded "Best Jazz Act Of The Year" in 2007. Wressnig tours the world with his own project, "Raphael Wressnig's Organic Trio" or with blues greats. In 2006 he released "Boom Bello" that also features Alex Schultz, Sax Gordon and Luis Ribeiro and in March 2008 he released "Cut A Little Deeper On The Funk" that features Craig Handy, Sax Gordon, Eric Bloom on BHM-Music.
In a career spanning 20 years as a blues guitarist and bassist, Alex Schultz has appeared on more than 40 releases, including a solo disc released on Severn records in 2004. Probably best known for playing with Los Angeles-based harmonica masters William Clarke and Rod Piazza, he recorded on four of Clarke's Alligator releases, including W.C. Handy-award winner "Blowin' Like Hell", and five "Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers" discs. Schultz also has four collaborations with fellow New Yorker Tad Robinson two on Chicago's Delmark label, and two on Severn, both of which were WC Handy- Award nominated.
Schultz is now exploring with impeccable sensibility and taste the soul-jazz groove he's loved for years, together with the young Austrian team of Raphael's Hammond B3 and sensational Vienna- based drummer Lukas Knofler. Result: USA/ Euro Jazz/Blues Fusion deluxe. "Don't Be Afraid To Groove" starts off in a Trickbag with Earl King's relatively obscure Imperial Records chestnut, "Mama & Papa," which has been previously covered by Anson Funderburgh, Snooks Eaglin, Jimmy McCracklin and of course by Mr. King. Check out Wressnig's deep B3 groove, and dynamite guitar solos by guitarist extraordinaire Alex Schultz, as this very fine trio takes us back to the early days of Cosimo Matassa's recording studio in the Big Easy. It's Funk time with the Isley Brothers smash hit "It's Your Thing," which is treated sumptuously here, where the band hones in and provides the perfect backdrop for Christian Bachner's sax explorations, Raphael's steaming B3, Lukas Knofler's expressive drumming which is reminiscent of the great Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, and is further enhanced by the cool percussion provided by Luis Ribeiro. A jazzy arrangement of trouble man Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" works delightfully, with some nifty fat intro guitar chords from Mr. Schultz, an extreme- ly soulful workout for Bachner's sax, and Schultz smartly takes this soul classic out with a very creative guitar solo. Alex Schultz penned "Droppin In" which is a high-tempo blues shuffle with some cool stop and start changes, where Wressnig just burns, and Schultz wails and sails. It is on this track that it becomes apparent that Wressning and Schultz are definitely tailor made for each other, as their minds often meld as one, and let's not leave out Knofler's kick-butt drumming!
"I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel to Be Free)" written by Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas has been eloquently covered by many including Solomon Burke, Cold Blood, Junior Mance, Illinois Jacquet, Marlena Shaw, Nina Simone, and up until now most recently by the great Derek Trucks Band. But make no mistake about the soulfulness of Wressning, Schultz and Knofler who all exude gorgeously on this timeless soul/jazz-classic, where Boston's Sax Gordon Beadle makes a very welcomed guest appearance adding more depth to this very good-time feeling track.
Wressnig's "Jimmy McGroove" is probably a tip of the hat to one of the all-time B3 greats Jimmy McGriff. Note how Wressnig nails McGriff's tone and groove, and how perfectly relaxed and adept are Schultz's guitar phrasings, which all harkens back to the good old days of soul-jazz music. Bachner is back for this one on sax and kicks in with a greasy solo, can anyone say more Bar-B-Q? Wressnig contributes his second tune here with the soulful and funky "Road to Detroit," which has more of a Memphis feel from the Stax/Soulsville originators of Soul, Booker T. & the MG's, plus what is particularly refreshing is Schultz's inventive guitar playing.
And speaking of Memphis - Al Green's "Lets Stay Together" is given a little extra added tempo, but not too much, as Wressnig, Schultz and Knofler smoothly fall into a very sweet pocket, and gently give new flavor to yet another classic gem from that great era of music. Papa Lou Donaldson's "Turtle Walk", originally waxed on Sweet Lou's 1969 "Hot Dog" LP on Blue Note, was a great recording that also featured Melvin Sparks on guitar, the mighty burner Charles Earland on B3, Leo Morris aka Idris Muhammad's classic drumming, and Ed Williams trumpet. Wressnig and cohorts Schultz, Knofler, and Bachner really dig down and get dirty-funky on this well selected golden classic, which is a perfect track for this tight retro band, so much so I am certain that Papa Lou would certainly approve of their fine rendition. The disk closes with Stevie Wonder's beautiful "As" which made its original appearance on Stevie's 1976 "Songs In the Key of Life" LP, and was also covered by the likes of Gene Harris, Blue Mitchell and Stuff. And speaking of the aforementioned Stuff, note Alex Schultz's Eric Gale-like Stuff sounding guitar playing, as you know that Alex had to have been affected by Gale's unique guitar playing, probably during Schultz's days of seeing the band Stuff when he lived in New York City. No matter, the band provides fine and approp- riate justice to Wonder's "As," where my only complaint is that I only had wished for it to jam-on for a more-lengthy period of time.
Schultz comments that ,,I've always dug instrumental R & B music. From Booker T & the M.G.'s to the mighty Meters, the Bar Kays, King Curtis, Young- Holt Unlimited and Ramsey Lewis trio, Cannonball Adderly & Joe Zawinul, Charles Earland, Lou Donaldson, the JB's, Billy Preston, and New York's own great Stuff- there was just something about hearing a tune where the emphasis was on the groove and the rhythm section, yet the melody and harmony were there for all to recognize, that always appealed to me.
Truth is, trying to play that way isn't as easy as it seems...
Growing up in NYC I was surrounded by great music. In the mid seventies everyone started talking about this gig up at Mikells: Gordon Edwards' Encyclopedia Of Soul. Cornell Dupree, Eric Gale, Richard Tee, a who's who of soul, gospel and groove. Later they were called simply STUFF. Taking these cats in many times, I began to dig that maybe Less really is More. Anyhow, it's always been a dream to play some tunes more or less in this way, and finally, down in deepest Austria, I had a chance. "As" was my direct homage to one of my heroes, the late Eric Gale. "What's Goin' On" is just so pretty. As to "Mama & Papa", I had the chance to back the great Earl King many times in the '90's and he was something else. Probably the only cat that Jimi Hendrix copped a solo from, note-for-note.
I hope you dig our little collection of tunes- some soul, some gospel, a taste of funk and always the blues.

Wressnig comments that "We wanted to record a "good-time" record, some cool stuff that we like to play live. My idea was to record some stuff that we all dig; here in Europe it's more fashionable to do original tunes, but Alex insisted on playing some classics. I thought, OK, let's go all the way and do a
whole record of classics and cool covers. The players on the record are guys that we use live. Sax Gordon is my first call when it comes to R & B; he's played "I Wish I Knew" with Solomon Burke! Christian Bachner's been out on the road with us. We've done "What's Goin' On" with Alex for years, so it was time to cut our version. With my original "Jimmy McGroove" I wanted to pay tribute to the great Jimmy McGriff, who I think was the bluesiest jazz organist. His groove is so strong, he's a master.
"I think the whole group, with the 'veteran' Alex Schultz and me, the 'upcoming' organist, is a nice package. After Alex guested on my record "Boom Bello!" it was time to do a record together. He's played a lot of blues over the years, yet he loves getting into the groove stuff with Lukas and 1. Luke and I played a lot of jazzy, funky stuff together over the years, but with Alex we added more blues, yet kept it funky and grooving too- so it works both ways!"

ЗУБ2007 сам давно просит поглощать его рипы, ну а пиратку по любому нужно заменить на рип с официального издания.
