In Bhutan, a mountainous, landlocked country bordering India and Tibet, music plays an important role in daily life and religious rituals. Historically, Bhutanese music was comprised of two genres: traditional ballads called zhabdro dangrem or zhungdra, and sacred music performed at religious ceremonies and festivals. Today the genres have expanded to include livelier folk songs called zhabdro gorgom (including popular Tibetan style songs called boedra) and Bhutanese contemporary music known as lu-saar. This recording features the director and founder of the Music of Bhutan Research Center, Kheng Sonam Dorji, performing on drangyen (Bhutanese lute) and singing traditional Bhutanese music along with several of his own compositions. Produced and annotated by Dorji for the 2008 Smithsonian Folklife Festival Program "Bhutan: Land of the Thunder Dragon", this recording brings endangered musical traditions to audiences outside of Bhutan.
Zhabdro gorgom
Zhabdro gorgom aka Gorgom / Boedra / Bödra / Drukdra Zhabdro gorgom (often simply referred to as "gorgom") is a style of folk music originating in Tibet and Bhutan, chiefly popular in Bhutan. Zhabdro gorgom differs from other styles of Tibetan folk by being informal and lively. Lyrically, zhabdro gorgom almost always focuses on religion. Zhabdro gorgom may be performed with voice alone, or it may be backed with a drangyen (a form of lute), chiwang (a form of fiddle), or lim (a flute). Or, it may be an ensemble of all of those instruments alongside a yangchen (a hammered dulcimer). Zhabdro gorgom is sometimes referred to by different names based on the vocalist's choice of language. Zhabdro gorgom originating in Tibet that mixes Tibetan with Dzongkha is called "boedra", and zhabdro gorgom native to Bhutan that is solely sung in Dzongkha is considered "drukdra". Beyond that, however, they are the same.
