A VISIT TO A FRANCONIAN TOWN FIVE HUNDRED YEARS AGO It was not all that easy to find the town one wished to visit. Those able to read and furthermore living in Nuremberg or Bamberg, could indeed go to the mapmaker and try there to inquire about directions and distances. It was easier, however, to join merchants or pious begging monks - they knew every reachable location and could on top of this lead the way there: It was best to travel in summertime with the spring floods of the valley roads gone, and one could cross the river fords on foot. Regensburg, well Regensburg was modern, they had a stone bridge defying all kinds of weather. The far-away Prague had one too and the princely town of Bamberg even had two small stone bridges across the Regnitz.

A cartographical treasure can be found for "Cronach", the most important city and fortress in upper Franconia within Bamberg territory. Four blue water courses run towards the city, where two church spires and just as many gates tower over a dozen red-roofed houses. Next to it, built on wooded heights, the powerful walls, outwork and mighty middle tower of the world famous, impregnable Veste Rosenberg. "Jagten Theissenortisch gehultz" can be read on the back and only the locals know its meaning. The townfolks also had their forests: "burger heltzer St. Stefen" and "Cronacher gemein".
On entering the town orientation was simple and fast without having to translate the mostly incomprehensible dialect into one's own language - every house of importance had its painted house sign, a picture language, which children already understood. The "Wild Man" had a hairy body and a tree in his hand, pulled out with root and branch - by all means a very inviting inn sign for haulagers, craftsmen, raftsmen. Laughing, screaming, drinking was not much calmer in other inns to be sure, even though they might have sported less exotic signs: a white swan, a red horse, the green tree or even a golden crown. A person of the past however first went into the town's church, only a short walk away from the town's gate - easily guided by the towering spire and continuous bell ringing. There he thanked the saint most responsible for this church for having reached the town alive: Protected from robbers; not attacked by wild animals; not gotten completey lost and walked into the swamps; not stumbled onto a war or shot by a princely hunting party at large; not being secretely robbed by innkeepers; not gotten sick. So now out one went to enjoy the incredible huzzle-buzzle of the town: Around the church were the market booths and everything needed for daily life. A fenced-in flock of geese advertised their freshness with loud cackling, hens were clucking with their chicks and promised fresh eggs daily, goats and kits as well looked with friendly eyes onto the strangers, just like their ruminating friends, the sheep. Large life-stock had their own market days and filled the town with screams and smells. For that the big cities had their own horse and cattle market, near the drinking troughs. There one could drive the cattle after a long journey cross-country. Breweries always had to take their water from above these troughs, "because it did taste rather dull and unfancy afterward". Every citizen knew very well how to handle horses.
Even the priest was on horseback during the rogation processions on the paths around the town; it was a particularly "pious" animal, the honorable apothecary used it to fetch his herbs from woods and meadows; the young lads stood with shiny eyes near those mares whose main purpose it was just to be ridden. The muscular cart horses were left to the merchants and farmers. The town police was obliged again and again to incarcerate boisterous lads for a night, for riding to fast and causing tumultuous confusion! Only those born into craftmenship lived in Kleberstrasse voluntarily: one found it easily just by following one's nose. All chewed-up bones and grizzle was masterfully cooked there into sticky glue. The tanners who manufactured the basic material for the finest leatherwear could also be smelled from a street away. But nobody took offense to that, since in front of every house the street smelled of quite the same things. People poured and threw many different things right into the streets. The rain pushed it on, so one thought. Moreover three times a week foreign pedlars had to sweep the streets clean of all the residue that had not been eaten by the chickens and particularly the free-running pigs. In rainy weather, the women and maids in particular wished for one of those "stony-paths", meaning cobblestone streets, such as the rich cities could afford them. The already mentioned sound of the church bells announcing continuous masses was completely muffled by the tinkers. In the inner court yards of the alley by the same name the prettiest copper pots and bowls were hammered over wooden forms. After the ringing of the bells for the Vespers in the evening, when all monks walked to their churches, the craftsmen ended all work and rural tranquility spread across the town. In the hospitals, foundations of rich citizens or the town aristocracy, the songs of the inmates praising their benefactors rose to the heavens and they asked for a good end to an arduous life.
A "good ol'time"? The women met daily at the town well; listened to the stories and sorrows of other families; knew about every new love affair; discussed the immoralities of the menfolk; comforted each other through many pregnancies and tragedies concerning their offspring; and confidently left insoluble things to the Saints, the Virgin Mary and her mother Anna. The men in town, especially if they were Master of their craft, were highly learned, had a very good education, since they had gotten far during their time as journeymen, all the way to the Welschland, even to Bohemia and Hungary. In these foreign work shops one acquired the art of the craft, as it cannot be described in books. As shoemaker or carpenter one could easily converse with poets and put words from the Bible to one's own melody: competitions gave due honour to those "Masters of all Singers". Albrecht Duerer never attented an academy for painting. Just like Lucas Cranach he was taught in his father's workshop and then during his years on the road. That every citizen should above all master various musical instruments was so natural, that it was not even worth mentioning. When on Sundays and holidays every kind of work was forbidden by heavenly law, people had time, lots of time. The Chroniclers often describe the sound of the many small house organs, ringing through open windows. This sound was so typical in a town. The bishops of Bamberg reserved about 100 days of the year for their subjects to be free of any kind of "servantly work" Family, friends, relatives, guilts, everybody had time for each other. On these days the menfolk met at the "Wild Man" in the evening and drank to their healths to get strong for the next day of work.
After all, it was not far to go home.
