The East Coast session featured Eddie Bert, Jimmy Cleveland, Henry Coker, Bennie Green, Melba Liston, Benny Powell, Frank Rehak, Bob Brookmeyer, Dick Hickson and Bart Varsalona — all in one trombone section.
They were backed by Hank Jones (piano), Wendell Marshall (bass) and Osie Johnson (drums).
The arranger was J.J. Johnson. (Substitutions on the three different dates included Milt Hinton in for Marshall, and Bob Alexander in for Henry Coker.) On the West Coast, two different sets of trombonists were used for the two dates.
The sliders included Marshall Cram, Herbie Harper, Joe Howard, Ed Kusby, Dick Nash, Murray McEachern, Tommy Pederson, Frank Beach, George Roberts, Ken Shroyer, Milt Bernhart, Bob Fitzpatrick, Joe Howard, Lewis McGreery, Frank Rosolino, Dave Wells and Bob Brookmeyer (working both coasts!).
The rhythm section featured Marty Paich (piano), Barney Kessel (guitar), Red Mitchell (bass) and Mel Lewis (drums).

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. The 27 trombones that earned one of Down Beat's rare 5***** review. Each of the selections on this set has between seven and a dozen trombonists along with a rhythm section. The first five selections were recorded with East Coast musicians and the next six with players from the West Coast but, truth be told, there is no real difference in the style of music. The arrangements of J.J. Johnson, Warren Barker and Marty Paich are strictly straight-ahead with an emphasis on the sound of the trombone sections. There are many concise solos along the way but the only standouts are Frank Rosolino and Jimmy Cleveland, as most of the other individual spots are brief. The music is fun and very much in the idiom of 1950s J.J. Johnson although Johnson does not actually play a note on this project.
Интересные дела !.... С годами меняются приоритеты. Не только в смысле фаворитов-солистов, но и по инструментам. Вначале был Сэчмо, Джеймс, Рознер (потому, впрочем, что видел и слышал ВЖИВУЮ!!!),
потом Его Величество Тенор!!!
А таперича, хоть и слышат Ухи до 18000 гЦ, пришла эпоха Тромбона как любимого инструмента!
Хотя Эллингтоновские Маэстро никогда не казались во втором эшелоне.
За Росолино - особое Спасибо ! Так рано он ушёл из жизни!... А может быть, и помогли ....
