Werner Lüdi - Baritone and Altosax on 'Las Hadas'
Recorded on September 3rd and 4th 1993 inside the dam Lucendro
Recorded By – Christoph Finé Renfer
"The dam "Lucendro" was built during the war in the years of 1942-47, a period when concrete was particularly rare. It is the only dam in Switzerland that is completely hollow inside. It is constructed as a series of 17 chambers distributed over a length of 270 meters and a height of 68,5 meters. Each chamber defines a distinct condition of space and the characteristics of sound and atmosphere."
"In a burst of sound the first blast hits the ceiling. The echo, five to seven seconds long, expands, opening like a blossom. It bursts overhead like a cascade of fireworks, like thousands of sparks floating down onto me. I only need to receive, to listen. I can mingle the most minute particles of time and light with the saxophone's tone, creating thunderstorms of sound. As if it were not I making the music--as if it were happening with me and through me.
What is producing these sounds? The overtones, of course. A series of overtones goes on forever. Using overtones as a vehicle vou can reach other dimensions, there are no limits. If you allow them to they will carry you on and on. I discover the slowness, I realize the importance of listening and perceiving, of allowing things to evolve. Miraculous. In this "cathedral of contained water" I experience how simple it is to transform from screaming to sighing to whispering to breathing...and vice versa."
