1990's obscure pastoral acoustic and electric soundscaping and romantic hopelessness
Idealistic meandering music that lost itself before it arrived
Predated sampling (just) and digital recording
Requires a patient and open minded listener to cope with the hiss and crackles and radical mixing
Part of a group of separate acts that shared a stubborn common land view of making it yourself, in your bedsit, in the winter, with the electricity about to be cut off

It's not so surprising that Light's debut album won comparisons to Flying Saucer Attack -- besides the fact that Dave Mercer was a longtime friend of Dave Pearce, Turning was mastered by mutual friend/collaborator Rocker. Rocker might well be contributing the occasional drums as well, though besides another guest appearance on "End of the River," this is Mercer's baby straight up. Seeing Turning as merely standing in the shadow of Further or any other album from the Bristol sphere of exploratory guitar music of the '90s, though, undercuts its own wonderful strengths. Mercer, like Pearce, is fascinated with the possibilities of acoustic and electric guitar combined with waves of reverb and shadowy but beautiful swathes of sound. Unlike Flying Saucer Attack, though, Light is less openly dedicated to folk goals in a new setting, neither does it seek to overpower through crumbling noise -- it's a calmer but no less intoxicating combination of the extremes at play. However, the almost jaunty swing of "Nature Man," covered in the dark, distanced chime of the music, and the sweet cyclical chime holding up the conclusion of "Unknown Song" (a bliss-out effect well worthy of the term) are just two instances where the balance works wonders. Mercer also possesses a different singing style, very often using vocal treatments to create a huskier, murkier tone than the quietly fragile one Pearce favors. The cascade of words on "Tale of White Passage" ends up creating as much melancholy murk as the music, arguably making things even more disorienting than before. To be sure, more than once the connections to FSA, Amp, or the like are perfectly obvious -- "Passing" in particular sounds like a collaboration between those other two acts -- but nothing takes away from the lovely appeal of Turning as a whole. allmusic.com

With a couple of songs from a 7" single making a reappearance, Paperboat is otherwise a fine collection of tracks recorded over several years by Mercer. As a follow-up to the excellent Turning, Paperboat does a great job at both extending the special glow of that album and including some new twists and turns. There's even more work done on the production, with more space and silence at many points, while what sounds like a violin part on "Back of Your Mill" adds a queasy flow to the proceedings. In interesting contrast, elsewhere the guitar work has never been clearer, with some pretty coruscating work on Mercer's part ripping bodily out of the speakers as a result. The lengthy opener "Dissonance Longs, for Peace," with its chopped-up swathes of feedback and massive, extensive soloing, has more of a barreling intensity than anything on Turning, for instance, though in exchange the Flying Saucer Attack comparisons have never been clearer. There's not a thing wrong with the end results, though, while equally rampaging songs like "Last Night, for the Stars" are offset by calmer but no-less-rich efforts as "Kes," a particularly lovely number, and the immediately following "Ode to Hardship," the first straight-up folk effort (vocals, acoustic guitar, only a slight feedback overdub) recorded by Light. Another majestic highlight is the shimmering, fragile start to "Place Without Reason," feedback turned into a haunting, ethereal string section from who knows where. Mercer's vocals, when present, at times convey a purring, careful threat; "Provisions," with his distorted, heavily echoed words shooting out over a steady music punch that suddenly ratchets up to a faster speed two minutes in, makes for one of the most violent recordings from the Bristol scene. allmusic.com

This is number 44, released on October 30, 2006. Artist Info: Light - Light originally released music on the Wurlitzer Jukebox label in the late '90s. This album is the first for seven years. It's experimental and acoustic...although there are songs. The series52 Concept: While chatting on the phone back in September 2005 the two people who run Unlabel decided to do this... During 2006 Unlabel is releasing a series of 52 CD albums - one every week of the year, all by people who aren't connected with us (i.e. none of our regular artists), to include all genres that we cover from the usual guitar based music - acoustic and alt. country to post-rock / math-rock, hardcore and beyond, piano, electronica / idm through to ambient, glitch, microsound, gabber, industrial / noise, soundscapes and anything else that takes our fancy, each in a strictly limited edition of just 100 copies. We decided to do something slightly different - instead of focusing on local artists, as has been traditional with Unlabel, we opened this project up to submissions from all over the world. It is entirely separate from the usual catalogue of releases and will run as a new offshoot of the unlabel family. The idea is to release work by unknown artists who may not otherwise be recognised at all alongside a handful of carefully selected guests, including a few names which may be familiar due to their other releases elsewhere. We receive quite a few demos these days from all over the world and it will be good to work with some of these people and to document music (albeit in a small way) that may not otherwise be noticed at all... Each 'album' in this project includes at least 8 tracks OR at least 30 minutes of material and obviously quality control is being kept to a high standard. All releases are packaged in distinctive matching artwork with the musical artists' own image on the front and two images from Unlabel on the back - including one of a landscape photographed every week over the 12 months of 2006 and all pictures are professionally printed on high gloss photo paper. Each sleeve is hand numbered and every CD includes a diary page insert for the relevant week of the year, which can be filled in and returned to Unlabel to win a unique prize. There are also inserts from the artists and Unlabel making each one of these fine discs a collector's item. http://www.unlabel.net/series52.htm _______________________________________________________________________ 01-Rise Before the Headland [04:19] 02-The Buzzard [06:06] 03-August Rain [05:25] 04-Mores Way [04:34] 05-Ocean Distress Transmission [05:36] 06-Song for Winter [05:40] 07-Ensis Hill [05:09] 08-Brownstone Shore [04:49] 09-Third Night [04:05] ------- 45:43 min
