The latest from Lou Grassi's PoBand. This time the guest artist is John Tchicai. This concert by the PoBand is unique for a number of reasons (besides the always-fresh improvisations and presence of guest John Tchicai) in that, for the first time it deals with a compositional framework; Art Baron joins the band; and, sadly, this was the late Wilber Morris' last outing with the band that he helped establish in 1995. Thankfully, Wilber's spirit and voice (instrumentally and vocally) is well represented on the date. Eight wondrous cuts. ***
Just when you thought that Lou Grassi might have exhausted the medium of his PoBand, he bounces back with an entirely new twist. This version of the band substitutes trombonist Art Baron for Steve Swell and adds the fantastic Danish saxophonist John Tchicai. But that is not all: Unlike other recordings of the PoBand, this one features composed tunes -- by Tchicai -- a startling difference that gives the group a varied though just as compelling flavor; only "Oxbow Incident" and "Red Sky in Morning" are freely improvised. The 66-year-old (at the time of the recording) Tchicai is a perfect addition: His improvisations add a subtle balance between the freewheeling ecstatic blowing characteristic of the group and the more refined European cultural aesthetic in which the saxophonist is rooted. The awesome front line of Paul Smoker, Perry Robinson, and Art Baron meets expectations, as to be expected, although trombonist Art Baron, while performing admirably, is not as clearly identified with the free style of the group and is no match for Steve Swell. As usual, Grassi's PoBand is full of surprises, with great soloing, sophisticated arrangements, and a pursuit of newness that never flaunts tradition. The band consistently produces some of the best music on the scene, and this album is a worthy part of its impressive legacy.

Seven years running amid a few personnel changes along the way, drummer Lou Grassi’s PoBand conglomerate is most assuredly founded upon richly formulated methodologies. With this effort, legendary modern jazz saxophonist/composer John Tchicai lends his expansive talents to this supercharged quintet. Yet sadly, this recording marks one of the final sessions of the great modern jazz bassist Wilber Morris, who passed away on August 8, 2002. The title, comPOsed sets the paradigm for this outing. In the past, Grassi and associates worked thru pieces on the fly. Besides some notated structural components, this band generally delves into dynamically oriented improvisational frameworks. Here, Tchicai contributes six compositions. One of the more notable aspects of this production resides within the group’s seamless melding of traditional New Orleans style jazz fundamentals into playfully organized abstractions. For example, “Daddy No Mana” features Perry Robinson’s hybrid, blues/Dixieland/free jazz work, although the band veers off the straight and narrow throughout. Whereas, Tchicai (bass clarinet) and Robinson render exploratory exchanges atop Grassi’s bubbly tom rolls on the complex arrangement of “Drunk & Happy.” Trombonist Art Baron’s raspy toned phraseology during “Stealing Beauty Pt. 2” establishes a multidimensional tone poem - marked by Grassi’s African based rhythmic patterns and odd-metered changes. The musicians pursue a celebratory vibe, marked by free-form interplay, conventional musings, and a bevy of cleverly enacted diversions. Nonetheless, the Poband have devised a cogently stylistic statement that looms as one of the most important modern jazz records of 2002.
