TH Subash Chandran is considered king of the Konnakol (rhythmic syllable language of South Indian music tradition) and as one of the leading Ghatam masters of India. With the double-DVD Set The Artistery of Ghatam and Konnakol he presents a fascinating first DVD in Konnakol exercises from simple to complex and on the other DVD then a unique introductory course in playing techniques and concert repertoire of classical clay pot percussion Ghatam.
Konnakol is the basis of the rhythmic system, and thus the basis for the game every South Indian percussion instrument. Konnakol can be as a universal rhythm system but also to other instruments and musical styles, transmitted, such as John McLaughlin in the DVD "The Gateway To Rhythm" shows. While it happens with John McLaughlin something more abstract and compact, Subash Chandran is moving more in the Indian context and spread it as a tremendous wealth of material - from simple phrases about various compositions and Thalam to Korvai, Mora, longer solos, and finally complete concert performances.
The presentation is oriented to fool Indian mediation forms, copy, first slowly, then faster, and finally so fast that the student can only watch with an amazed smile and notice where it can go sometimes ... Notations are nowhere. As visual guidance but each spoken syllables are displayed. The spelling is based here on English pronunciation patterns, which can irritate German users might. Language of instruction is English and subtitles are not, but it is already explained little bumpy and also in rather plain English - is the key doing this not only a great abundance of material is taught, but also very specific practical tips to the use of naked abdomen for the modulation of the bass tones on the Ghatam.

T. H Subash Chandran is one of the leading artists of Carnatic percussion and is recognized as the 'King of Konnakol'.
On this first of its kind video, Sri Subash Chandran shares his knowledge on the ghatam, the clay pot of South Indian percussion, and konnakol, the art of vocal percussion. The ghatam lessons are approached from the beginning with introduction to strokes, playing patterns, compositions, korvai, mora, and varied talams. The konnakol lesson starts from basic vocalization patterns, building to compositions, and korvais.
Demonstrating the guru student relationship, Sri Subash Chandran works through the vocalizations carefully and then performs them at faster speeds. The material provides a foundation for long term drumming of many traditions. The vocalizations are printed right on the screen for study and accompanyment.
Additionally there are fantastic solos and an interview with Sri Subash Chandran on his life in music and thoughts for learning.
