Many people will have known the name of Terje Isungset in recent years from his work with Swedish band Groupa, but this Norwegian percussionist wears many musical hats. He's a jazz performer and composer and writes for the ballet and the theatre as well.
In his solo work he displays one of his deeply felt passions: nature. Over the years he's recorded compelling music played on wood, stones and granite. His latest release presented him with not only musical but also very practical challenges: itwasrecorded at the famous Ice Hotel in Sweden, with all the instruments made of ice,in a purpose builtice studio of course!
Joining Terje on the album are some of the best musicians working in Scandinavia: Arve Henriksen on ice trumpet (complete with ice mouthpiece!), Iro Haarla on ice harp, trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and the haunting voice of Lena Willemark.
The result is 50 minutes or so of unbelievably atmospheric music. You can hear the deep-setsilence of the ice, you get the feeling that some of the sounds have been frozen in time and are only now being set free, calling from deep within the earth.
As you move through the 9 tracks (called such names as 'Blue', 'Frozen', 'Water', 'In Glacier') the pulse is very slow.The key is to go with the flow; this is music to be with,to be surrounded by, immersing yourself in its beautiful and chilling melodies and rhythms.
This is no gimmick album. This is lovingly crafted music made with precision. "The sound of ice is unique," says Terje, "warm and very beautiful.. Nature is very strong. It can do what we human beings cannot do. It is not me making the music, but I am there, I am part of this music."
