Alfonso Ferrabosco the younger (b. Greenwich, c. 1575; bur. Greenwich, March 11, 1628) was an English composer and viol player of Italian descent. Although he gained access to the royal court as early as 1592, it took him almost 10 years to come to the attention of the queen, but in 1601 he became a member of the royal consort of viols. Ferrabosco marks the true beginning of the English Baroque.
When Elizabeth I died in 1603, her successor James IV appointed Ferrabosco as music teacher to Henry, Prince of Wales and Ferrabosco continued to work in the king's service, becoming Composer of the King's Music in 1625, in 1626 succeeding John Coprario in the post of official court musician. The respect shown for him by his contemporaries proves that Ferrabosco was the court musician of his day, borne out by the fact that he was also the most copied. His innovation and gift for counterpoint opened up new horizons in music for the viol consort. In the standard repertoire, Ferrabosco expanded the vocal register and forged a new linear style, which combined the sinuous styles of the ricercare with the rhythms and verve of the canzona, whilst preserving the basic formal characteristics. His composition is wrought out of subtle modulations and interwoven motifs that lend his work a monumental sculptural quality. In this selection Jordi Savall and his musicians paint a portrait of this exceptional composer which is essential listening for fans of the Hesperion XXI consort of viols.

Talk about being overshadowed by your father! In the case of Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger, Ferrabosco Junior, the English Ferrabosco (whatever you want to call him to tell him apart from his Dad), this must have been desperately difficult when he was working as a musician in the Elizabethan court at the end of the 16th century.
Alfonso Ferrabosco senior had, as the notes for this recording put it, passed through Elizabethan England like a meteor: an Italian who brought southern warmth and passion to the chilly English court, and made a huge impression, not just on the likes of Thomas Morley and William Byrd, but also on Queen Elizabeth.
He seems to have been one of her favourites; she paid him well, and it's been suggested that he acted as a secret service agent for her. But Ferrabosco was accused of murder, and left England under a cloud, abandoning his two (probably illegitimate) children, who were cared for by one of the court musicians.
So Alfonso Junior grew up knowing his father's reputation, yet probably never saw him again: when Alfonso Senior petitioned to have his children sent to him, Queen Elizabeth refused. Young Alfonso was accepted at court in his turn, a singer, lutenist and violist. His chief legacy is his fantasias for viols, full of subtlety and imagination,that is, according to Jordi Savall, 'players' music to its core - idiomatic for the hand'. Savall and the other members of Hesperion XXI revel in Ferrabosco's brilliance, bringing the same freshness and romantic freedom to the project that made their recent recording of William Lawe's music such a joy. I thought I'd tire of these Dances and Fancyes, Consorts and Pavans, none of which is longer than five minutes, but I fell under the spell of the playing: the sheer beauty of the sound, the freedom of the phrasing, the sense of daring and an absolute refusal to let this 400 year-old music lie lifeless on the page. It's vividly recorded as well, and the presentation and packaging is of the high standard we've come to expect from Savall's label AliaVox. This is their fourth volume of English Consort music; with playing like this its never a case of teaching granny to suck eggs, or coals to Newcastle; more like reaching the parts other viol consorts rarely, if ever, reach.
