Riding With Confidence Series I
Clinton Anderson’s Downunder Horsemanship Method is respected around the world for its focus on safety and the confidence it instills in horse owners. Riding With Confidence Series I is your introduction to Clinton’s acclaimed method and your key to becoming the best horseman you be and training the horse you’ve always dreamed of, whether for trail or national competition.
Clinton takes all of the guess-work and uncertainty out of developing a solid partnership with his easy-to-understand instruction that features his 8 Steps to Success. Throughout the series, he works with several horses to first demonstrate the goal on an advanced horse and then teaches the exercise step-by-step to an untrained horse. You’ll see firsthand the problems you may come across and how to fix them. Clinton’s in-depth instruction will also help you avoid common mistakes.
The focus in this series is establishing a willing and respectful partner under saddle. You’ll learn how to gain control of all five body parts (the head and neck, shoulders, ribcage and hindquarters), cue your horse to go forward off a gentle cue, stop off a simple voice command and sidepass along the fence, among others. Whether you’re an experienced rider training a green horse or a novice mastering your own skills, Riding With Confidence will help you understand fundamental horsemanship principles and become the horseman you desire. With Clinton’s no holds barred direct approach to training, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish!

4-disc DVD.
Disc One
• Flex with the Halter on the Ground
- A horse that is light on the ground will be light under saddle. Teaching your horse the concept on the ground first, makes teaching the same concept under saddle much easier.
• Flex with the Bridle on the Ground
- A horse can never be too soft or too supple. Teaching your horse to soften to the bridle on the ground will make it easier to teach him the same lesson under saddle.
• Touch and Rub Exercise
- It’s very important to be able to yield the horse’s hindquarters any time you want because when a horse rears, bolts or takes off, he’s using his hindquarters against you. But if you can get him to yield and disengage by crossing over with his hind feet, it’s like pushing the clutch in on a car, you can take away his power and regain control of the situation.
• One Rein Flexes
- Lateral flexion is the key to vertical flexion. The softer the horse is from side to side, the easier it is to get him to tuck his nose in and collect.
• Yield the Hindquarters at the Standstill
- All of your horse’s power comes from his hindquarters. By being able to disengage his hindquarters, you are essentially telling him that you can stop him any time you want and take his power away.
Disc Two
• One Rein Stops
- By using just one rein to stop your horse, you can make him soften laterally and yield his hindquarters. Any time a horse disengages his hindquarters, his gas pedal and balance are immediately taken away from him. Without a gas pedal, he can’t go anywhere and without balance, he can’t rear or buck.
• Cruising Lesson at the Trot and Canter
- In this exercise you will establish the cruise control button on your horse. It’ll teach your horse to go the exact speed you want him to go.
• Follow the Fence at the Trot and Canter
- This exercise will help you start to teach steering to your horse by using a fence line for assistance. Your horse will learn to be responsible for his own actions.
Disc Three
• Yield the Hindquarters on the Fence
- This exercise will further help you teach your horse how to yield his hindquarters and incorporate more suppleness into the maneuver.
• Bending at the Walk
- You want all five of your horse’s body parts to soften around to pressure from your hands and legs. In this exercise, you will ask the horse to bend and soften laterally around your inside leg.
• Stop at Whoa
- Whether you’re in an arena or on the trail, a good stop is important to your safety. Throughout the Downunder Horsemanship Method, you’ll learn a variety of ways to stop your horse, but in this exercise, you’ll teach him to stop off a spoken command.
• Four Leaf Clover at the Trot
- This exercise combines teaching your horse to do smooth rounded corners and straight lines. It’ll help develop the horse’s steering wheel so that you can guide him all over the arena.
• Post to Post
- This exercise will teach your horse to ride in a straight line without anticipating whether to go left or right. It’s also a great focus exercise for you because in order to get the horse to where you want, you have to look to where you want him to do.
Disc Four
• Yield the Hindquarters and Sidepass
- This exercise sets the foundation for teaching your horse how to sidepass. By yielding the horse’s hindquarters first, you’ll encounter less resistance when you ask him to move laterally away from your leg.
• Vertical Flexion at the Standstill
- The first step in teaching your horse to collect is to teach him to give to the bit at the standstill. Once he softens to the bit at the standstill, then you can progress through the gaits.
• Vertical Flexion at the Walk
- After you’ve taught the horse to give to the bit and soften at the standstill, the next step is to teach him how to soften vertically at the walk.
• Yield the Hindquarters and Back Up
- This exercise is the foundation to teaching your horse how to back

Disc One
• Yield to a Stop at the Walk, Trot and Canter
- The hindquarters are where all of your horse’s power comes from – it’s like the engine of a car. By teaching him this exercise, you are telling him that you can shut his power down any time you choose to.
• Yield and Bend at the Walk
- This exercise will help you to push your horse’s hips up underneath himself while bending in a circle, which sets the foundation of collection.
• Yield and Bend at the Trot and Canter
- This exercise will build off the previous one, but you’ll also be working on the horse’s gear box by asking for downward transitions from the trot and canter. Any time a horse’s feet speed up, there will be more resistance, so it’s important to be able to practice the exercise at all three gaits.
• Yield the Hindquarters and Back Up
- This exercise is the foundation to teaching your horse how to back up. Yielding the hindquarters first gets the horse’s feet moving, which makes it easier to redirect his energy backwards.
Disc Two
• Sidepassing at the Standstill on the Fence
- This exercise will help you gain better control of your horse’s shoulders, ribcage and hindquarters, which are the three main body parts you need to control to be able to guide the horse and keep him between your hands and legs.
• Draw to a Walk from a Trot
- When you pull on two reins and add leg pressure, most horses’ first reaction is to pull against you and run faster. This exercise will teach your horse to rate your body and soften to your hands.
• Serpentine
- Serpentines are a great suppling exercise for your horse. It will help to get him soft through all five body parts using lateral flexion.
• Draw to a Stop from a Trot
- Before asking your horse to soften vertically and collect at the trot, he first has to understand that when you pick up on two reins it means soften and give, not resist and push through the bit. This exercise will get the horse thinking about stopping and slowing down rather than speeding up when you pick up on the reins.
Disc Three
• Draw to a Stop from a Walk
- This exercise will teach the horse to rate your body and soften to your hands. The horse needs to understand the difference between 1) leg pressure only means speed up, and 2) leg pressure accompanied by rein pressure means soften to the bit.
• Vertical at the Trot
- The soft feel you obtain in this exercise will eventually turn into collection.
• Lateral Flexion with Vertical Flexion
- This exercise will start to teach your horse how to tuck his nose in and soften while his head and neck are bent. Practicing this will help when you start doing circles and spins and asking the horse to collect because it will help him keep his body shaped by himself.
• Find the Center
- This is a guiding exercise that teaches the horse to go around in a balanced circle by himself on a loose rein.
• Yield the Hindquarters Transition on the Fence
- This exercise works on getting more hip control of your horse as well as softening and suppling his entire body. Hip control will be very important when it’s time to teach the horse to perform correct lead departures, flying lead changes and collection.
Disc Four
• Draw to a Stop from a Canter
- Before asking the horse to soften vertically and collect at the canter, he first has to understand that when you pick up on two reins it means soften and give, not resist and push through the bit. This exercise will get the horse thinking about stopping and slowing down rather than speeding up when you pick up on the reins.
• Vertical Flexion at the Canter (Draw to a Walk)
- This exercise will teach the horse to rate your body and soften to your hands.
• Vertical Flexion at the Canter (Hot Potato Give)
The soft feel you obtain in this exercise will eventually turn into collection.
• Vertical Flexion at the Canter (Hold the Soft Feel Longer)
- In this exercise, you’re going to ask the horse to hold the soft feel longer when you pick up on the reins. In order to do advanced maneuvers with the horse, you must be able to maintain vertical softness over a period of time.
Riding with Confidence Series III
In Riding With Confidence Series III, master horseman, Clinton Anderson, introduces thirteen new exercises that expand upon the foundation of respect and softness you’ve already achieved following the first two series. You will be blown away with the series’ information and behind the barn secrets top trainers use to prepare their horses for advanced competition.
Clinton continues to work with the Quarter Horse mare, China, to demonstrate each exercise following the 8 Steps to Success. His no holds barred, direct style of teaching makes the series full of valuable advice. Among the exercises you’ll find in the series are sidepassing, rollbacks, two tracking and counterbending.
Clinton’s signature approach to training for both horse and rider makes riding pure enjoyment. You’ll be amazed at the transformation your horse undergoes following the exercises in this series. You’ll reach a level of softness and respect you’ve only dreamed about! Guaranteed to improve your horse’s transitions, rhythm, suppleness, accuracy and balance, Riding With Confidence Series III is a can’t miss for today’s serious rider.

Disc One
• Sidepass off the Fence
- If you can push the horse laterally off of your leg, you’ll be able to direct his feet as he’s circling and teach him flying lead changes.
• Rollbacks on the Fence at the Trot and Canter
- Rollbacks are a great exercise to get whole body suppleness and control. In order to get a horse soft and supple, you have to get control of all five body parts—the head and neck, shoulders, ribcage and hindquarters. Once you have control of the horse’s whole body, you have control of his feet.
• Two Tracking Stage I and 2
- Two tracking gets control of all five body parts and encourages the horse to get softer and more responsive to your hands and legs.
Disc Two
• Should-In/Shoulder-Out
- When you can move your horse’s shoulders independently from the rest of his body, you can push him out of a circle and you can push him back into a circle relatively easily. The better shoulder control you have, the better steering wheel you’ll have.
• Counterbending at the Walk and Trot
- Counterbending softens and supples your horse’s entire body and improves his steering. The more you can control his shoulders, the better you’ll be able to steer him.
• Yield the Hindquarters and Bring the Front End Through
- This exercise will teach your horse that when you bring your leg back on his side, he has to yield his hindquarters and when you bring your leg forward, near the girth, he has to yield his forequarters. This exercise sets the foundation for spins and rollbacks where the horse has to shift his weight to his hindquarters and bring his front end around.
• Neck Reining at the Walk, Trot and Canter
- If you want to show your horse in any breed event like an AQHA show, you’ll have to show him one handed, which means that he will have to be able to neck rein.
Disc Three
• Yield the Hindquarters in a Straight Line
- This exercise teaches the horse that even though he’s traveling on a straight line, you can still push his hip up and over in either direction. This exercise will give you better control of the horse’s hindquarters.
• Post to Post Rollbacks
- This exercise will accomplish several things. First, it will teach your horse to stop better and get back on his hindquarters. Secondly, it’ll help with his overall collection and teach him to round his back because he’s working off of his hindquarters. Thirdly, it’ll get a lot of softness in his poll.
• Flower Power Exercise
- This is a great steering wheel exercise and will help your horse remain soft during turns.
• Counterbending Transitions
- Transitions teach the horse to rate your body language so that when you sit back in the saddle and relax, he slows his feet down.
Disc Four
• Backing Circles on the Ground
- Backing circles helps with the horse’s collection because he has to work off of his hindquarters. If you can back the horse up on the ground, it’ll be easy to teach him to do the same thing under saddle.
• Backing Circles Under Saddle
- Backing circles gets the horse’s inside front foot to step back and over so that when he goes into a spin or rollback, his inside front foot is always stepping in the correct position. When a lot of horses rollback or spin, they put their inside front foot too far forward and then have troubling crossing over correctly.
• Drive to a Stop at the Walk, Trot and Canter
- Driving the horse up and over the bridle gets him soft through his entire body. The more suck back a horse has, the better he stops, spins and rolls back.
