Album Info & Reviews
Recorded by Kevin Emil Micka at The Berwick
Mixed by Neptune
Mastered by Scott Craggs at Old Colony
Jason Sanford's continuing exploration of post-industrial (in both senses of the word) noise in the service of permutations of song continues on MSG RCVD, coming out at a time when his band's sheer doggedness over the years has meant a new coming around to the kind of sonic possibilities the group has embraced. Thus, when in the hands of a younger band the grumbling electronic crunch and drumming of "Luminous Skull" might have simply been a fusion of early Fad Gadget and early Cop Shoot Cop, Neptune here add their own eerie intensity to both arrangements and performance, with the siren sound that interrupts further twisting things around. But it's far from solely doom and gloom. A keyboard-led break toward the end of "Negative Reversal" changes the tone of everything from burrowing aggression to a little romantic gentility, while "Dark Report"'s chant and quiet percussive start mean that the eruption of noise here and there provides contrasts instead of steady builds, a further way to demonstrate possibilities throughout instead of just doing the same thing. When the guitars burst in short Morse code-like tones, it's contextually more epic than most straightforward solos. - Ned Raggett, AMG
Boston noise rock band Neptune build all their own custom made guitars and basses out of heaps of scrap metal. Which in most peoples hands would probable turn out as a complete & utter disaster. However Neptune aren’t ‘most people’ & this record, according to Craig Johnson, is similarly far from ordinary.
I wouldn’t say I was all that 'clued up' on Neptune. I’ve heard a few things about them, read reviews, shared gossip. The basics of it are that they’re a Boston based, 3 piece Noise / Avant Guarde group who are famed for constructing instrument out of found objects, scrap metal and such. Now they have a new record out entitled 'msg rcvd’.
The whole album has a feel of being unexpected. It’s difficult to sit down, listen to it and try to predict where it will go next or if, in fact, it will go anywhere at all. The surprising nature of the album comes down to the range of obscure instruments they use. Guitars made from pieces of found metal, amplified gas cans, metal buckets and 'feedback organs'; they all add an element of surprise due to the obscure nature of the sounds that emanate from them. There’s definitely a unique use of sound here though. Of all the little noises that appear throughout the 40 minutes of the album, it’s genuinely difficult to try and decide exactly what is making them, and that gives the music that real 'uneasy’ quality that I’ve found so inspiring. - John Robb, Louder Than War
