The frenetic pace with which We Were Promised Jetpacks launch into their sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach is a statement of intent for the remainder of the record. ‘Circles and Squares’ is awash with chunky chords, lots of distortion, distant vocals and drumming which veers between the manic and the composed, rat-a-tat flourishes on the snare leading to more gradual flirtations with the rest of the kit as the song crescendos to its conclusion. ‘Medicine’ was always destined to be a single, groovy bassline underpinning quizzical lyrics and an infectious, droning chorus. ‘Act On Impulse’ is softer, gentler, the tranquillity of the intro replaced by the incessant building of noise, which falls away to soft palm-muted chords, breathy vocals and the gradual filling in of the empty spaces with keys, feedback and carefully worked drum patterns, all finally succumbing to fatter chords. It’s a wonderful piece of clever, articulate music. ‘Picture Of Health’ is anything but, the lyrics lending the album title, the title an irony to itself. ‘Boy In The Backseat’ picks up the pace again and ‘Human Error’ maintains it, before album closer ‘Pear Tree’, which is more atmospheric, more refined, but just waiting to burst open at the death.
We Were Promised Jetpacks have certainly lived up to the promise of their debut and far exceeded it. The ten tracks of In The Pit Of The Stomach make for an incredibly engaging album, one which deserves higher accolades than this and will really set the tone for the autumn. The only real criticism is that there aren’t eleven or twelve tracks, as the album finishes leaving you wanting more. Well worth a listen.
