‘Open Flux’ is something of a scene setter. It’s as if dawn is breaking over a misty landscape. ‘Perception’ gets underway with beautiful plucked strings hanging in the air then decaying into the distance. Lush, warm backing adding a shimmering heat haze. Things take a decidedly dark twist for ‘Aeternus’, the sun going behind a mountain, leaving the valley in shadow. ‘Empty Memory’ takes us back to warmer realms but this time with a hint of sadness. Things are peaceful but somehow not as they were. Something is missing. ‘Downfall’ doesn’t lift the mood but to me provides a meditative atmosphere from which answers can come. ‘Echoes from the Dryland’ is a beautiful number with gorgeous flute drifting over a lush reverberating backing. Maybe we now have peace of mind and are moving on. ‘Fractal Dimensions’ drifts along pleasantly enough. We get to another flute lead piece, ‘Age of Irreality’. The mood is similar to ‘Echoes…’ but with a hint of sadness. So far all the tracks seem to have gone together as different chapters of the same story. We now move on to a new quest for the five-part title track. The opening section fizzes into life then settles down to a moody soundscape where unpleasant things could be lurking in the mist. The second part uses the most exquisite combination of sounds with bubbling effects giving it all a rather primordial swamp like feel a bit like a slightly more melodic version of ‘Zeit’. I absolutely loved it. The next section is brighter with a slow lead meandering around warmer shimmers. The fourth is like an approaching storm with chollyThe final chapter has a subtle melodic quality and overall is all rather tranquil and dreamy. It’s a lovely way to finish a gorgeous album. Javi may be well known for his Berlin School outings but this album is a real must for Robert Rich fans, especially Aureal 1 to 5.
2011-Gravitational Waves /EP/ (28:05)
1.Solar Dome (11:52)
2.Elephant Trunks in Space (9:07)
3.Dispersion (7:06)
Label: Synth Music Direct
Catalog#: none
Javi returns to his roots for this superb Berlin School styled EP. Little echoing note droplets, like rays of light shining trough a dense overhead canopy, give a pleasant start to ‘Solar Dome’. A simply awesome bass laden sequence then becomes the main feature. A second higher register sequence erupts through the storm clouds and we surge forward on an incredible exciting wave of pure energy. Mellotron is used subtly as the rapid pulsations morph, having an understated melodic quality all of their own. The bass line is always there but surges to even greater prominence from time to time. Oh my goodness- what an opener. ‘Elephant Trunks in Space’ must be one of the more bizarre titles to a track. We have an appropriately cosmic beginning. Deep sighing drones come in but then, as with the opener, another amazing deep sequence makes an entrance. Turn up the volume and feel the ground shake (might be an idea to check your insurance policy covers music induced earthquake first!). More percussive note patterns chatter away in the background, like objects falling from shelves, and then the most gorgeous tron makes an entrance, as if sun is shinning through the slowly settling dust. A further sequence, this time quite melodic, darts this way and that. This is absolutely incredible- yet another highlight in Javi’s list of creations. I must admit I was going to say this is one of his best tracks ever but I think I have already put this many times in reviews of his music in the past. ‘Dispersion’ begins with twittering effects. A slow melancholy melodic loop emerges, backed by moody flutey synth. Two sequences materialize together covering all areas of the sonic spectrum from those frequencies you feel rather than hear to the ones ideal for solo duties. The surrounding pads provide the ideal setting for such a complex picture of weaving notes. As with the other two numbers this is incredibly powerful stuff but this time there is also a sort of moody undercurrent. If you like your mid to late 70s style sequences these three tracks are essential listening.

3.Way To Unknown Place (14:00)
4.The Slot (17:04)
5.Projection (11:55)

'Hypnosis Room' starts with shimmering metallic drones giving it quite a spaced out feel. The first sequence materializes in the third minute and you know straight away that this is going to be another Berlin School masterpiece. It’s all deep and thunderous. A second more melodic sequence morphs this way and that whilst the first continues to make the ground shake. Then just to stamp the mid 70s credentials even more firmly onto the music a haunting mellotron rises through the pulsating brew. Things become even more exciting as a third sequence falls into formation. How can it possibly get better than that? The title track starts as if we are hearing some fizzing, throbbing machine. Little note runs skip above it all like stones over water before one after another submerging under the lake surface. Then in comes the most immense sequence and lead combination that reminded me a little of one of the tracks off Edgar Froese ‘Pinnacles’ but with a bit more of a snarl. Again the excitement builds and builds as more melodic detail is added subtly to the mix while the sequences once again go completely ape. ‘Way to Unknown Place’ has a rather spooky start, very atmospheric but also a little disturbing. The sequence emerges suddenly without warning. It is very rapid but also has a sort of mean unstoppable menace to it. A lead line like laser fire flashes from the speakers then a more melodic sequence seems to come in to do battle with the first. Initially it just seems too ‘nice’ to cause any worry to the dark side but it builds quickly to full fighting force as both lines meld together to form one mesmerizing pulsating wall of sound, each losing its identity (unless you concentrate very closely). More sequences seem to enter but I don’t really want to analyse it any more, it is much easier to let the wonderful wall of sound fall over you. To start off with ‘The Slot’ makes it sound like we are in the middle of a swarm of very angry wasps. As with all the tracks here a sequence soon becomes a prominent feature, a lovely analogue sounding lead combining with it perfectly. Compared to what has gone on with previous tracks this really is quite a calm section but then that sequence dies away and is replaced by another of the distinctly ball breaking variety. A searing lead solo that would be just brilliant if played live scorches a flaming path through the air and the sequence becomes even more intense in reply. Yet more sequences are added and I’m simply once more in Berlin School paradise. ‘Projection’ continues with blistering full on sequencing soothed by tranquil tron. Yet more and more lines of pulsations once again increase the excitement. Is this amount of gratuitous sequencing really legal? Surely nothing this exciting should be! Another wonderful track to finish an album I simply couldn’t fault. The only real problem is trying to come down again after listening to it.
2012-Psychedelic Voyage (1:07:37)
1.Psychedelic Voyage (18:20)
2.Mechanical Spirit (18:02)
3.Into the Sylence (3:56)
4.Sundown (27:13)
Label: Synth Music Direct

There are three long tracks and a short one. What a completely inadequate way to start a review of an album that is so special. The title track begins with electronic effects whooshing all over the place like android wasps hitting warp drive! This then calms down and normality is resumed with lush tron backing stormy windy sounds. When the inevitable sequence arrives it is not messing around, it is a real bass laden beefy one making the ground shake. A softer more melodic sequence bounces over the top beautifully and the mellotron surges once again. Lovely little melodies nestle in the middle of the mix being just identifiable as the sequences go ape. Any Berlin School fan should be in absolute raptures by this point (especially if you are into the 70s variety). Of his last few albums I have said each was the best and they have been but with this track- I am just speechless. I can’t remember last time I loved a piece of music so much. There is so much power here as well as brilliant under stated melodies, wonderful lead lines and such a feeling of joy. I was jumping around in excitement (must have looked a real idiot- but I simply couldn’t care). At the moment if I had just one track from the whole history of Electronic Music to take with me onto a desert island I think it would be this. It is not uncommon for an artist to open with the ‘killer track’ but the problem with doing that is where do you go from there? The Second Track ‘Mechanical Spirit’ begins all shimmering and misty and when the sequences and stunning lead arrives it retains this rather moody feel. Another fantastic start. Things then go through a rather inventive staccato section with stabbing notes. The energy levels start to build again, almost to those of the opener. This is Berlin School but with a very appealing new twist. The leads are once again brilliant, searing but not outstaying their welcome. It is a track that I am sure will be loved by Berlin School fans but there is enough inventiveness in there as well to also appeal to a wider audience. ‘Into the Sylence’ is a short track and quietens things down a bit with gorgeous processed piano, joined later by soothing mellotron. It is simply exquisite and I would say essential to calm the heart, which has been set raging from the previous two numbers. The last track ‘Sundown’ initially remains calm and again a little moody. A tinkling sequence emerges like the aurora borealis lighting up the night sky. A second sequence joins it (and yes, of course more tron). We then get some cosmic guitar licks that once again hit the spot perfectly. I asked Javi who played the guitar as I loved it so much and he said that he did! He certainly kept that talent quiet. The sequences start to go into overdrive and the guitar becomes more insistent, even quite heavy. Again there is no denying that this is incredibly exciting stuff. Things quieten down for the middle section and then the guitar makes a growling return accompanied by scintillating driving rhythms and blistering sequences. Whereas I suppose the first track here could be compared to Redshift at their meanest this is more like what Arc would sound like if they were joined by Gary Houghton from RMI. If I had to pick a favourite track here it would still probably be the first but to many this might be even more of a jaw dropper because of the liberties it takes with the traditional Berlin School formula but with such a devastatingly effective and exiting result. No, I’ve changed my mind, this is my favourite track. No, hold on, it’s the first. Oh blast it, just buy the album and make up your own mind!
