Можно сказать, что вся история FREEDOM CALL началась с исторической встречи Криса Бея (Chris Bay) и Дэна Циммерманна (Dan Zimmermann) в 1988 году. В те времена кавер-группа "China White", участником которой и был Дэн, искала нового вокалиста. Крис прекрасно подошел "China White" и группа получила работу в клубах южной Германии. Потом Крис и Дэн вместе играли еще в нескольких кавер-группах в течение некоторых лет. Их пути несколько раз расходились и снова пересекались.
Крис и Дэн очень часто заводили разговоры о создании совместной группы и, наконец, в январе 1998 года их мечты стали реальностью: Крис предложил Дэну принять участие в написании нескольких песен и высказал ряд интересных многообещающих идей. В то же самое время состав FREEDOM CALL был полностью доукомплектован. В группе появились бас гитарист Илкер Эрзин (Ilker Ersin) и гитарист Саша Герстнер (Sascha Gerstner). Крис и Дэн нашли Сашу в начале 1998 года играющим в одной из многочисленных кавер-групп юга Германии. Они настолько были поражены его техникой игры на гитаре, что тут же пригласили его присоединиться к группе. Илкер был известным в Германии сессионным музыкантом. К тому же Крис несколько лет играл с ним вместе в одной из своих многочисленных ранних групп. Летом 1998 года была завершена работа еще над пятью новыми песнями. А осенью 1998 года были подписаны контракты со звукозаписывающими кампаниями во Франции, Японии и Германии, и FREEDOM CALL начали репетировать. 2-го января, ровно через год после основания FREEDOM CALL, началась запись первого альбома "Stairway to Fairyland", которая завершилась через два с половиной месяца официальным релизом.
В 25-го мая 1999 года группа впервые дебютировала с живыми выступлениями в рамках французского турне, в котором они участвовали в качестве разогревающей группой перед Angra и Edguy. Французский тур был очень успешен и по опросам журнала "Hard Rock" французские читатели определили FREEDOM CALL на вторую позицию в номинации "лучшая новая группа '99". В течение лета группа принимала участие в нескольких фестивалях и концертах и одновременно работала над новым материалом. В конце августа FREEDOM CALL начали запись мини альбома "Taragon", в который вошли пять новых треков, а также кавер версия на песню "Dancing with tears in my eyes" группы Ultravox. Японская версия альбома включала перепетую и пересведенную версию песни "Stairway to Fairyland" и альтернативную версию "Tears of Taragon" с Биффом Бифордом, вокалистом Saxon.
В ноябре 1999 года FREEDOM CALL отыграли серию из семнадцати концертов в Германии, Бельгии, Нидерландах, Франции и Швейцарии в качестве разогрева Saxon, в рамках их Металхэд-тура. Реакция аудитории на выступления FREEDOM CALL была просто замечательной.

В октябре 2000 года FREEDOM CALL получили приглашение принять участие в мировом турне Hammerfall и Virgin Steele. Состоялось более сорока концертов практически во всех европейских странах: Норвегии, Швеции, Дании, Германии, Бельгии, Нидерландах, Австрии, Швейцарии, Италии, Испании, Португалии, Венгрии, Словакии, Польше, Франции.
В марте 2001 года сразу после завершения тура группу покинул гитарист Саша Герстнер. Он заявил, что хочет создать собственную группу, но уже спустя несколько месяцев пополнил состав легенды немецкой тяжелой сцены "Helloween". FREEDOM CALL устроили прослушивание для кандидатов на вакантное место и довольно скоро нашли нового гитариста. Им стал двадцатидвухлетний швейцарец Сэдрик Дюпон (Cedric Dupont). Его способность играть на гитаре, фонтан музыкальных идей и мягкий характер способствовали выбору остальных участников группы в его пользу. Одновременно с произошедшими переменами в составе продолжалась работа над новыми песнями. Летние выступления группы показали поклонникам, что произошедшая замена гитариста пошла группе только на пользу. В конце этого насыщенного событиями года, группа получила очень хорошие новости: FREEDOM CALL были подтверждены в качестве разогревающей группы в рамках намеченного на апрель - май 2002 года турне по Германии, Швейцарии и Испании группы Blind Guardian.
Это побудило Дэна, Криса, Илкера и Сэдрика к записи нового альбома. В середине января 2002 года группа начинает работу в студии. Альбом "Eternity" впервые продюсировали сами Дэн и Крис. Чарли Бауерфайнд на этот раз занимался только записью барабанов и итоговым сведением. Возможно, из-за произошедших перемен и истинного вдохновения каждый из участников группы выложился "на полную" и запись шла легко и быстро. В результате песни звучали очень мощно. В середине апреля 2002 года запись была завершена и все силы были брошены на репетиции перед предстоящим турне с Blind Guardian. В течение этого тура группа под руководством Чарли Бауерфайнда записала материал для живого альбома, основу которого составили записи с концертов в Дюссельдорфе, Штутгарте и Мюнхене. Для этого альбома были отобраны тринадцать песен, а выпуск был запланирован на начало 2003 года.
9 марта 2002 года FREEDOM CALL вместе с EDGUY дали концерт в Москве.
"Freedom Call" – одна из многих немецких металлических команд, пошедших по пути, проторенному их соотечественниками из "Helloween". Ее основатели, Крис Бэй и Дэн Циммерманн, познакомились в 1988 году. Кавер-банда Дэна "Chine White" искала подходящего вокалиста, и Крис как раз пригодился на эту роль. С тех пор в течение нескольких лет пути Бэя и Циммерманна неоднократно пересекались и в других кавер-группах. У Дэна, числившегося к тому моменту в рядах "Gamma Ray", появилось, наконец, свободное время, и они с приятелем засели за написание своего материала. Дело пошло довольно быстро, и уже через несколько недель у музыкантов была готова демка из шести композиций.
В качестве консультанта парни привлекли продюсера Чарли Бауэрфейнда. Тот послушал пленку и, одобрив, разослал по лейблам. Отзывы оказались очень позитивными, и Крис с Дэном бросились доукомплектовывать состав группы. Для пополнения рядов "Freedom Call" они выбрали басиста Илкера Эрсина и гитариста Сашу Герстнера. К лету 1998-го у музыкантов было готово пять новых песен, а по осени они взялись заключать контракты.
В январе следующего года "Freedom Call" отправились на сессии дебютного альбома, и через два с половиной месяца работа была завершена. А в мае состоялись первые концерты, когда во Франции команда разогревала "Angra" и "Edguy". Тамошнее население настолько восхитилось появлением новых металлистов, что по опросам журнала "Hard Rock" присудило "Freedom Call" второе место в разряде дебютантов. Остаток 1999 года команда провела на сессиях EP "Taragon", а также каталась по Европе в компании с "Saxon". Сразу по окончании тура музыканты вновь оказались в студии и принялись за работу над вторым альбомом. На этот раз сессии растянулись почти на год и несколько раз прерывались для вылазок на публику. В начале 2001-го немецких металлистов пригласили разогревать "Hammerfall" и "Virgin Steele" в их "Renegade World Crusade Tour".
По возвращении с гастролей Саша Герстнер заявил, что играть металл ему надоело, да и вообще он хочет основать свой проект. Пришлось искать нового гитариста, и после нескольких прослушиваний на эту должность был взят 22-летний швейцарец Седрик "Седе" Дюпон. Боевое крещение Седе состоялось на летних фестивалях 2001 года, где металхеды встретили его благожелательно.
Вскоре "Freedom Call" получили хороший подарок – их пригласили весной 2002-го открывать концерты "Blind Guardian". Это был удачный момент для раскрутки очередного альбома, и музыканты тут же ринулись в студию. Работа шла быстро и слаженно, и к апрелю сведение "Eternity" было завершено. Диск вышел в начале июня и угодил прямиком на 55-е место в национальных чартах. Тем временем совместное "свободно-гвардейское" турне прошло с большим успехом, и оставшуюся часть гастролей в поддержку пластинки "Freedom Call" доигрывали в статусе хедлайнеров. Некоторые из выступлений того периода были записаны на пленку, и на их основе в 2004 году вышел концертник "Live Invasion".
Несколько ранее в команде появился клавишник Нильс Ньюманн, но после тура в поддержку "Circle Of Life" он вместе с Илкером ушел в проект "PowerWorld". Примерно в это же время сбежал и Дюпон, а в ряды "FC" влились Армин Дондерер (бас) и Ларс Реттковиц (гитара). В 2007-м обновленная конфигурация выпустила альбом "Dimensions", который в отличие от экспериментального предшественника возвратил команду во времена "Eternity". Весной 2009-го Дондерера сменил Сами Саэманн, при чьем участии "Freedom Call" взялись готовить опус под названием "Legend of the Shadowking".
