Я когда начинал слушать, у меня был pre-intermediate. Сначала ничего не понимал, через пару месяцев понимал относительно, через год понимал всё.

Ну у меня где-то elementary + -) адаптированные книги читаю) попробовал сейчас послушать Introduction ну так не много понятно) где-то не очень, но не могу сказать, что прям совсем ничего не понял) Говорит очень хорошо звуки вроде не заметил, чтоб сильно проглатывал.) А Вы как слушали? Просто слушали? или ещё с его сайта скрипты брали и разбирали не понятные слова и т.д.? И как вообще слушали одну и ту же запись по много раз в день или как? Делали ещё что-то, по мимо этого?) если не секрет?)

Скрипты не брал, большая часть которая сейчас есть появилась только не так давно. Где-то в прошлом году. Набирались слушетелями подкаста. Я когда начинал, эпизодов было в два раза меньше. Последние у него вообще замечательные, т.к. хорошее качество звука. Первые слушал по несколько раз, некоторые слушал по пять-семь раз, потому что нравились. Так продолжалось пока не дошёл от начала до конца. Естественно, параллельно занимался отдельно английским, много читал, набирался новых слов и т.д. Скажем так, я слышал голос каждый день Luke(а) больше чем свой и чей либо другой.
p.s. Был бы по-моложе лет на десять, сейчас бы пошёл в университет на английскую филологию. Я склоняюсь к тому, что в Украине всё равно других нормальных факультетов не существует. Возможно, ещё бы на математический пошёл для развития мозгов. Все остальные is a complete waste of time.

Ясно, спасибо. Вчера его первый подкаст слушал, тоже понравилось. Где-то понимаю, где-то нет) потом ещё решил попробовать на скрипты посмотреть, выписал новых слов штук 30) (хотя подкаст короткий: 12 мин идёт ) и потом ещё после этого слушал опять, этот же подкаст и уже на много лучше понимал.
Да и кстати, спасибо за раздачу большое.

248. Marooned With My Music: Rick Thompson
“Marooned with my Music” is an interview concept based on a popular and long-running BBC Radio programme called “Desert Island Discs”. In that BBC programme, celebrities and noteworthy people are invited onto the show for an interview. They imagine that they have been stranded on a remote desert island and are only allowed to take certain items with them, namely: 8 pieces of music, one book and one luxury item. During the programme, the interviewee is asked about their life and their musical choices. Desert Island Discs remains one of the BBC’s most beloved radio programmes and has been broadcast on the radio for many years. In my version, “Marooned with my Music” I have decided to interview members of my family: My Dad, my Mum and my Brother.
Welcome to Marooned With My Music. My castaway today is my Dad Rick Thompson. Rick has been working in broadcast journalism for over 45 years, including nearly 30 years at the BBC where he worked as foreign news editor, and editor of the UK’s flagship daily news programme the 9 O’Clock News. He now runs his own broadcast training company called T-Media, which helps to bring BBC-standard television broadcasting to other countries around the world. Along the way he has become something of an expert in the art of efficiently and effectively delivering information to viewers on television and radio; something which requires a combined interest in all the big stories of the day as well as the values of language and public service. Вот вы как считаете нужно, чтоб все слова были понятны? Или главное общий смысл? Просто вот например подкаст который называется Easter первое прослушивание понимал как-то так не очень местами и в основном где Люк один говорил без своего отца)) потом после нескольких ещё прослушиваний стал чуть понимать слегка общий очень общий)) смысл, а сегодня решил попробовать посмотреть в текст и выписал огромное количество слов, которых я не знаю при чём это я ещё не со всего текста выписал, а где-то половину только прошёл.) Так в каждом подкасте? или потом слов будет меньше уже? Ну я имею в виду такое большое количество новых слов?) Но сейчас ещё лучше начинаю понимать эту серию, но и прослушал я её наверное раз 8 - 10 уже)

Эм, я вообще свой словарный запас пополняю через книги, фильмы и т.д. Всегда использую только
cambridge dictionary или oxford, есть он-лайн версия. Очень редко пользуюсь русским словарём. Слов в английском языке очень большое количество. Идиомы, и phrasal verbs. Естественно, некоторые слова приходится по 100 раз даже сегодня просматривать, потому что редко встречаются в текстах или в разговоре. Очень важно, знать грамматические конструкции would/used to + verb, be used to + ing, get used to + ing, они очень похожи, но различаются по смыслу. Тут главное, это практика, постоянная ежедневная практика, чтение, прослушивание, старайтесь запоминать слова не в переводе, а читать значение слов в английских словарях. Советую, например, использовать также сервис thesaurus.com. Когда Вы осваиваете большое количество слов, старайтесь при использовании слов в предложениях не повторяться. Например, если Вы знаете слово childish, Вы встретите когда нибудь слово puerile. Первое слово легко запомнить, т.к. оно состоит из child + ish, где вторая приставка означает quite (в какой-то степени), опять же, всегда обращайте внимание на синонимы, потому что легче будет запоминать группу слов, связывайте их, вместо quite можно написать в предложениях up to a certain degree/point/extent. Советую также скачать упражнения со словами от oxford. Закончите первые две книги и очень много слов будут всплывать сами по себе. Пассивный словарь вообще без проблем увеличить, проблемы начинаются, когда Вы пытаетесь что-то писать. Я старался переслушивать только те эпизоды, которые вообще не понимал. С самого начала слушал по двадцать раз. Второй момент учтите, это акцент - скачайте, например, для себя раздачу, называется An Idiot Abroad. У главного героя помоему Manchester акцент и он разговаривает быстро/слэнгом/невнятно. Это Вам не Люка слушать. Старайтесь не придерживаться одного акцента, смотрите фильмы с британскими актёрами. Например, фильм Calvary - это ирландская шикарная драма, я недавно посмотрел. У них свой акцент, который тоже сильно отличается от Люка. Всё что необходимо, это погрузиться в английский язык и дышать им... через три месяца, многие слова будут знакомы. На начальной стадии, очень быстро всё остаётся в памяти, очень сложные уровни Upper-Intermediate, Advanced и выше (это если за короткий период времени)

Ясно, спасибо обязательно скачаю эти книги! А Вы не могли названия тем назвать грамматических? Которые Вы выше писали, на что следует обратить внимание в грамматике? Я по книге Мёрфи проходил present perfect, passive.

Я не знаю, никогда не брал в руки русские книги... у меня сразу хард-кор начался, я стал заниматься с нэйтив спикером. Я едва понимал его и практически не разговаривал. По чуть-чуть... заговорил. Однако, разговорный - это самый сложный и долгий этап. У меня больше всего хромает именно разговорный.
Мои основные книги были Total English, pre-intermediate - advanced. Учили от корки до корки и параллельно занимался по другим книгам сам.

Я знаю, только Raymond Murphy (красный) прижился больше в русскоязычном обществе. Ни разу не встречал на англоязычных сайтах упоминание об этой книги. Я сразу начал с English Grammar In Use (Blue) и делал упражнения исключительно для закрепления (т.е. искал слабые стороны в себе).
Что касается грамматики, я предпочитаю использовать Practical English Usage by Michael Swan. Но это больше как гид в грамматике. Вряд-ли оно будет Вам интересно сейчас. Покупать лучше электронную версию на Google Play.
Total English покрывает грамматику, но кроме этого там есть достаточно интересные упражнения, тексты, вопросы, обсуждения и т.д.. Т.е. учиться по ней гораздо приятней и интересней, чем по Мёрфи. Мёрфи мало чему научит, но для быстрого повторения неплохая книга.

Понятно спасибо большое. Я думаю чуть по позже я и до такой книги как Practical English Usage by Michael Swan доберусь. Но красный Мёрфи до прохожу, там не вся грамматика, но за то она - по чуть чуть там даётся, чтоб не убить начинающего)) да и тем более её не обязательно проходить пункт за пунктом, она считается как справочник и можно проходить только те темы которые не знаешь, так я и делаю.

250. Marooned With My Music: Gill Thompson
Welcome to Luke’s English Podcast and this special series, called Marooned With My Music. My castaway today is my Mum, Gill Thompson.
Born as part of the baby boom generation after World War 2, Gill grew up and lived in England during a time of great social change in the latter half of the 20th century. 251. Welcome to LEP / 16 Things You Should Know about LEP

When I get nominated for this competition, I usually have quite a lot of new visitors to the site by people who are checking out the podcast for the first time. So, let me take this opportunity to say hello to any new visitors and to give you an idea of what LEP is all about.
In this episode I’m going to tell you 16 things you need to know about LEP. After listening to this, you should have a better idea of what this podcast is all about!
1. I’m a teacher from London, living in Paris, with about 14 years of experience and both a CELTA and DELTA qualification. I’ve lived in Japan too, and I have experience of teaching adults and children at all levels of English, for general, business or more specific purposes. Students I’ve had in the past include Brazilian world cup winners, Scandinavian heads of state, top business executives and even a porn star. I now teach at The British Council and at a top university in Paris.
2. I started LEP in 2009 after taking a course in podcasting with The Consultants E. At the time I just felt like I wanted to have my own radio show, and I discovered ways of creating podcasts on my new Apple Mac laptop, and realised I could publish them myself on iTunes, and then get the word out using social networking. I started to get really busy producing episodes of the podcast. The aim was always to mix up teaching with general entertainment. I wanted to produce episodes that were instructive but also fun to listen to for their own sake.
3. I’m also a stand-up comedian, and I do try to use those skills in my episodes too, from time to time! I do stand-up comedy regularly in Paris, in English. This may not be obvious from this episode, as I’m not adding any jokes to it! From time to time I share some videos of my comedy on this website, and some of my listeners have come to see me perform my comedy live, which is great!
4. The podcast now has over 250 episodes, and I have a really loyal following. In fact, my listeners have lots of names – the LEPpers (yes, LEP stands for Luke’s English Podcast), LEPsters, LEPaholics, LEP Ninjas, PLEPS (people of Luke’s English Podcast) and so on.
5. Some of my listeners have created podcasts of their own, after being inspired to do so by listening to LEP.
6. There are various types of episode that you can expect on the podcast. Some are about specific aspects of English, for example – episodes about idioms, grammar points, pronunciation, vocabulary, and slang. In some episodes I try to keep my listeners locked-in and entertained by making up improvised stories off the top of my head. In some episodes I feature interviews and conversations with friends, family and special guests. Some episodes involve me just talking directly to my audience about whatever comes into my head. Some episodes are about films, music or popular culture, and some episodes deal with specific aspects of British culture and lifestyle. So the podcast covers a broad range of topics. Ultimately, I love the freedom of being able to talk about anything I like! The main thing is that it creates engaging content that encourages learners of English to do more and more listening!

Welcome to Luke’s English Podcast and this special series, called Marooned With My Music. My castaway today is my brother James Thompson.
Since being born in the mid 1970s in the south of England, it’s hard to say really what James has been doing for the past 39 years of his existence on earth. Nevertheless, he is a man of taste, a man of music and a man of experience. In the 1990s he studied a combined degree in English and Design at a university in Cambridge, before becoming something of an expert in wine tasting, wine selling and indeed wine drinking. Quietly entrepreneurial, James set up a successful t-shirt company in the late 1990s and now works as a freelance designer and artist – with perhaps the pinnacle of his career so far being the logo he designed for Luke’s English Podcast. I’m joking of course – James has contributed design work for various companies and organisations over the years. As well as being an artist, a designer, a wine enjoyer, a t-shirt maker and skateboarder – James has always been a keen lover of music both as a drummer & producer and as a collector of vinyl records, and I imagine that having to choose 8 records to take to his desert island has been something of a challenge for him. 253. Rapping with Fluency MC!
Chatting and rapping with Jason R. Levine aka Fluency MC!
I’m feeling pretty excited today because I’ve got a bit of a celebrity on the podcast. Jason R. Levine, also known as Fluency MC is something of a legend in the world of online English language teaching. He’s become pretty well known on YouTube in particular for his videos in which he uses hip hop to bring a fresh approach to teaching English. Jason raps his English lessons, and many of those raps have become YouTube sensations – for example “Stick stuck stuck” the past participle rap (over 2.5million views on Youtube), and the present perfect rap which is a full on explanation of the grammar rules for the present perfect tense, delivered in rhyme. But, Jason is not only a teacher who raps – a look at Jason’s CV shows that he is involved in a number of very interesting English teaching projects – he leads workshops, has published material and is an English specialist for the US department of State – which makes him sound like a government agent, and he has a very interesting academic and personal background which has led him to take this fresh new approach to language teaching. On the musical side, Jason raps but he also plays the drums like me, and he DJs and produces his own tunes. There’s so much to ask him and so much to talk about, and hopefully Jason will do some rapping on Luke’s English Podcast too, and who knows – I might even get involved in that as well. You can look forward to all of it in this episode. (In fact, if you listen to the whole episode you will hear both Jason and me rapping on some of my brother’s music)
I’ve never met Jason before, this is the first time I’ve spoken to him in fact. I always thought Jason lived in New York, but a while ago I was on Facebook and I saw a photo of him in Paris and I assumed he’d visited for work or for a holiday, so I sent him a message saying “next time you’re in Paris, how about an interview for LEP” and he wrote back saying “Actually, I live in Paris”. Needless to say I was pretty surprised. What are the chances of that!? So naturally, I thought I’d take the opportunity to hook up with him and interview him for the podcast, and he’s sitting right next to me now so let’s get started…

Привет, можешь пожалуйста помочь с переводом 4-го подкаста? Я тут мучаюсь и не знаю как правильно это перевести:
Howard: Maybe he is doing something different. Why not? Who wants to be against the rapping why he is doing something you know like a business rap.
Luke: Yeah, well you can do something different, that’s fine but it still has to be good. Yeah, anyway I hope it’s a joke and because I think he is great and we have to ….

Честно говоря, я переводами не занимаюсь. Когда я слушаю, я воспринимаю сказанное сразу же, как, например, я никогда не перевожу с украинского языка на русский или наоборот. Поэтому принципу и учу английский. Пусть переводами занимаются переводчики, это отдельный вид мастерства, который требует тренировок.
Мне тем более тяжело понять смысл сказанного не прослушав диалог.
Ещё один момент, в английском строются и употребляются совершенно другие грамматические конструкции и слова. Поэтому дословным переводом заниматься - неправильно.
p.s. Вообще-то это пятый эпизод. Прослушал, они прикалываются. Люк говорит перед этим, что его слова песен (про кого они говорят), когда он читает реп, звучат как будто он взял их из бизнес секции в газете.
Далее, Хауард говорит - возможно он занимается другим направленем в музыке, почему нет? Никто не против репа, но почему у него какое-то направление бизнес-реп.
Люк: Да, конечно. Ты можешь уйти в своё направление, это понятно, но это должно звучать прикольно. В любом случае, я надеюсь, что это шутка, потому что я думаю, он талантливый и мы должны ....

я вот всё таки не могу понять, если в английском употребляют другие грамматические конструкции и т.д. то как говорить на английском языке? Если я думаю по русски? И ещё Вы говорите не переводите я с этим согласен, но блин тяжело как-то очень.. и тоже не понятно как понимать слова которые я не знаю? Допустим слово different просто для примера, вот Вы например никогда это слово не переводили на русский, но тем не менее вы знаете, что оно означает на русском как это? Я что-то не могу понять?)

Эм, ну, Вы же не с русским языком были рождены? Правильно? Привязывайте абстракные слова к своему опыту. Например, возьмите две ложки и скажите They are different. Необязательно переводить, что они разные, главное это понимать. Привяжите это слово к другому опыту и т.д.
254. IELTS Tips & Tricks
An episode full of advice for those taking the IELTS test.
Hello and welcome to Luke’s English Podcast and this exciting and edgy new episode. I hope you are ready physically, mentally, spiritually, because this is going to be epic. I’m attempting to make this sound slightly more dramatic than it actually is. This one is all about the IELTS test, which is not normally an exciting subject, but with the use of this background music and my tone of voice hopefully I can convince you that this really is edge-of-your-seat stuff. If that isn’t enough, and you still need to be convinced of the dramatic tension at the heart of this episode, to keep you fully engaged, I am also expecting a delivery from the post office at any moment. A few days ago I ordered a pair of trainers online – a fresh pair of old-school addidas sneakers, and at some point this morning I expect them to be delivered to my door, by the postman. There could be a buzz at my doorbell at literally any second. I can hardly contain myself, and I hope it’s the same story for you. This is a truly riveting and adrenaline fuelled experience for me, and I hope it is for you too. And it is in this highly tense and gripping context that I bring this episode of LEP to you right now. Now if we can just keep up this level of focus throughout the rest of the episode, that would be great. If it helps you to concentrate, imagine that at any moment my addidas trainers could be delivered. I may even open the package live while recording the podcast. Will they be the right size? Переводить тексты, предложения - этому обучают в школе, что есть неправильно. Там сами учителя плохо знают английский, потому что на ту зарплату, которую предлагают, нормальный учитель не пойдёт обучать детей. Надо же чем-то занять детей, вот и занимаются дословными переводами. Этот путь в никуда. Забудьте переводить. У Вас не будет времени на перевод в реальном разговоре. Когда я разговариваю на украинском, я не думаю по-русски, я выдаю моментально предложения. Иногда, я могу вообще "загняться" и говорить с русским человеком по-украински или наоборот. Когда я приехал в Израиль, первые месяцы пытался переводить: мне говорят предложение, я думаю, перевожу его, перевожу после то, что хочу сказать и пытаюсь издать звуки. Это сложное общение и чаще всего собеседник быстрее догадается, что ему пытаются донести, чем получит ответ.
Не ищите никаких техник - фигня это всё. Люди пытаются привлечь к себе внимание за счёт Вашей лени. Рецепт в изучении только один - постоянные тренировки, чем чаще и дольше тем лучше. Читайте, слушайте, делайте грамматические задания и лучше всего параллельно общайтесь с человеком вслух. Не думайте, что через мясяц английский придёт. Чтение и понимание услышенного - придёт быстрее всех, но не оценивайте свой уровень по этим двум направлениям. Как только научитесь говорить и применять грамматические конструкции + использовать в свой речи phrasal verbs и idioms - это и будет Ваш реальный показатель.

Понял спасибо, то есть если Люка подкаст допустим не на сто процентов понял, даже после много кратного прослушивания, то переходить на следующий можно? или как? Потому как без детального разбора мне не получается хорошо понять про чот где они говорят, а часто даже с ним не получается) так как когда перевожу не состыковывается иногда с русским языком и плюс много времени очень отнимает и сил.)

255. Taken 3 / Expressions with ‘Take’
My response to the film Taken 3, plus 12 expressions with the word ‘take’.
The Film
*Spoiler alert* – I might give away some details of the story line, although I think you probably have a good idea what kind of thing you can expect. Someone did something to his family, and Liam Neeson will use his very particular set of skills to find them, he will hunt them down and he will kill them. There will be loads of high-octane action, some very questionable moral actions, and the usual offensive stereotypes of foreign people.
You should know that I’ve talked, at length, about Taken 1 already on this podcast.
Yesterday I went to the cinema and tweeted “I’m on my way to see Taken 3…” Naturally, some people wanted me to talk about it on the podcast, so here it is.
In a nutshell, this film is bad – it’s total pants, it’s piss poor, it’s lame, it’s cheesy, and frankly, it’s dull. It’s like a b-movie, but with Liam Neeson. It retains few of the redeeming qualities of the original, brings nothing new to the table and just looks like everyone involved is just doing it for the money. That’s not to say it was without enjoyment – I did enjoy it a bit, perhaps because I’d lowered my expectations before going into the cinema.
Expressions with Take
There are loads. Here are 12. Listen to the episode to hear full explanations and examples.
1. Take someone for a ride = to rip someone off
2. Take someone to the cleaners = to rip someone off, or to beat someone
3. Take something for granted = to undervalue something which is actually very valuable to you
4. Take it on the chin = to be strong and resilient in the face of criticism or adversity
5. Take it out on someone = to express your anger/frustration by being nasty or aggressive towards someone else
6. Take advantage of something = to make the most of it, to exploit it
7. Take it easy = relax
8. Overtake = to move in front of someone (e.g. in a car)
9. Take over = to take control of something (to acquire)
10. Takes one to know one = In order to know something you have to be that thing too
11. To have what it takes = to have the necessary qualities to do something
12. Give or take = approximately

I agree with you if we're talking about a regular listener. However, it'll take ages to download a bunch of episodes from Luke's English Podcast or its RSS. Not only am I seeding the release with my 80Mbps upload speed, but also there are many seeders and leechers who simultaneously share pieces with each other.
