Thizzing and blown-out ambient trap x dub techno vapours from Ukranian artist xtclvr... Produced under trying circumstances, Ukraine's xtclvr wrests an escapist sense of hazed beauty on a compelling maiden voyage for bleary-eyed specialists Sferic, written and recorded during long nights under curfew and occasional shelling. Vocals are there, but mostly unintelligible, disrupted by a persistent offbeat churn and fragmentary instability, a paradoxically lush but anxious sound that reflects broader butterfly effects of war and its ripples of socio-economic fuckery on one level, and simply a trippy soundtrack to the afters on another. Ten smudged shots unfurl across a 3D stereo space in gyring and shearing motion, cryptically shielding and scrambling a message meant to be deciphered by your sixth senses. A vocoder is diffused in aerosolised designs on the rugged lean of 'Perspective', setting up a chain reaction that buckles to more fraught feels on 'Allgreen' and the ruptured raptures of a 'Storm Shadow' recalling Nazar's recent sound design spheres for Hyperdub. bsw948 lends nervous bars laced into the warped matrix of 'Night Shift Cut', and 0b3th perfuses the iridescent dub techno of 'The Wise Mystical Tree', whilst indy lends to the ambient drill of 'Acid Flavour', and closer 'Dead Smoke' perhaps best betrays, even if metaphorically, a feeling of psychic distress in its dank, submerged mire.

Ambient plugg is a subgenre of Plugg that came into attention in the 2020s. Ambient plugg combines minimalist Ambient soundscapes with sparse drums of plugg, minimal low-end and 808s, with a focus on soft atmospheric texture. The work of Izaya Tiji and his main producers, wifi, Eddie Gianni & Mingo are often credited as one of the main influences of the genre, with Izaya Tiji rapping on atmospheric plugg production and popularizing the style itself, leading to the style of production being showcased in several tutorials. Some of the early influences of were 990x, TGWOG, AK Colette, Amai, Yayayi and iji who incorporated minimal ambient soundscapes with Instrumental Hip Hop and Trap production, which led to the development of ambient plugg. The genre is sometimes referred to simply as ambient, with terms like ambient beats being used to describe the production. Ambient plugg derives characteristics from ambient music, with both having a focus on texture and atmosphere. The term nod has been used to describe the ambient plugg style of Shed Theory, with their strong use of glitchy effects on vocals and sleepy atmosphere. Many collectives such as requiem, cr3stfallen, dpm and welcome2heaven have pioneered the production side of the genre, with Marlon DuBois, ian, Bucqqi and Xang using the production heavily. Other segments of the sound can be traced to sasmochi and Yungwebster of Nostalgians (pending) who combined these plugg soundscapes with Chopped and Screwed effects. Ambient plugg often takes influence from Cloud Rap because of the atmosphere and reverb-heavy production, however ambient plugg gravitates towards a minimal and softer sound. Producers would later develop their own sound from ambient plugg with chinapoet and ivvys incorporating different drum rhythms. Ambient plugg often gets fused with other styles of plugg, with dpm using distorted 808s from Dark Plugg within their production. As the genre developed into 2022, ambient plugg drifted to more ambient and experimental influences. This led to Nature Recordings and elements of Glitch sound design being incorporated heavily, creating this signature sound. This blend of genres has been seen with .cutspace, Margo Proxy, larua and Iokera, all of which had a focus on textures. IDM has been combined with ambient plugg, with sv1, .cutspace and Sgarz being heavily incorporated within their production style. Ambient plugg would see more attention in 2023 through interface being used in an AI video called opium birds, giving the style of music more attention and growing its popularity.
