Jimi Anderson and his group release their first album that apparently has been a longtime comin’. The trio has put together a twelve-song odyssey through classical styled melodic rock songs inspired by the greats, etc. Yeah, I can go on about silly things like them going on the road and whatever else is written in the press release but that doesn’t really tell you if this album that has been longtime coming’ actually is worth spending time listening to. But I can tell you that it is, even though the cover art is one of the more boring I have seen this year and it starts with the same old song.
Pretty familiar in terms of musical style as it builds on inspiration from past greats and so on. Melodic rock/AOR is probably the best way to describe this album and Jimi sings really well with a strong classical vocal style. Good variation over then tracks and a sensible playing time of 47 minutes, that actually feels somewhat shorter than it is. The one argument one can have is that Jimi and his group isn’t exactly coming up with something we haven’t heard before, bur their performances are great as is the production.
The may not tick the originality box but they tick the great song box so they have actually managed to make something great with this album. The opener isn’t really the same old stuff; despite the title it is a really great song and probably the best one on the album. But there are more than that, like the great title track and I also really enjoy the track called Feel Like Letting Go – but I think all the tracks are really strong and you will have to be looking really hard to find any meaningful flaws. The only problem I see is before mentioned lack of originality but as the tracks are great it isn’t that big of a thing, this time.
I would say that this comes really recommended, a great album with great tracks that is really well worth checking out. Jimi and his group has really put together a strong album that ticks the right boxes and fortunately don’t just float down the same old rivers as most albums – it is good enough and interesting enough to be a great album, that will be my final words for tonight.
