St. Nikolai Cathedral in Greifswald and its Organ
The St. Nikolai Church in Greifswald was first mentioned in a document in 1280. Since the town charter dates as early as from 1247, we can suppose that a St. Nikolai church already existed at that time. The present brick building, named after St Nicholas (bishop of Myra, called on especially by fishermen and sailors), bears the marks of its gradual genesis from the 13th to the 15th century. The church was essentially designed around the year 1400: “an utterly homogenous architectural set, orientated to the new construction of the choir, which includes almost harmonically the walls of the old nave and the solid tower” (N. Zaske). The anonymous architect mainly clung to the tradition of Northern German Gothic architecture built in brick. The elevations and vaults of the long nave clearly date from the time when the choir was built; together with the soaring tower - a navigational aid and symbol of municipal sovereignty which is to be seen for miles around - it forms a “thrilling architectural set, which presents itself impressively in clear-cut outlines, with tight corporeality and mighty dimensions” (Zaske), the whole characterized by that typical rigour of the years around 1400 as well as by business realism. The church underwent many changes in the times of the Hanse, during the wars and the Reformation, and because the tower collapsed several times. Between 1824 and 1832 the architect and painter Christoph Johann Gottlieb Giese (1787-1838) renovated the church radically in the style of pure neo-Gothic romanticism. In 1824 Giese began with the choir, passed to the nave as from 1827 and to the organ gallery as from 1829. His partner Christian Friedrich (1779-1843), a cabinet-maker and brother of the painter Caspar David Friedrich born in Greifswald (who had not been willing to accept the commission to renovate the cathedral), supplied the wooden parts, such as the organ front. In 1835, two years after St. Nikolai had been consecrated on 30 January 1833, the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel said: “The restoration of the St. Nikolai Church carried out by the painter and master builder Giese must be considered as essentially successful by today’s standards.”
A further urgent restoration of the church (which has been named Dorn since it was assigned to the diocese of Greifswald created in 1945) lasted from January 1977 to the end of 1980. The work on the brick walls was intended to restore the state of the early 19th century. During the restoration of the interior begun in 1982 the homogenous 19th-century equipping was conserved and enlarged by some modem elements. In 1988 the VEB Jehmlich-Orgelbau Dresden installed a new organ in the case built by Christian Friedrich. The organ front is mainly characterized by extremely long and thin dummy pipes behind which is hidden a classical pipework: Great Organ, swell organ and choir organ, and the pedal on both sides. After an overhaul forteen original registers of the Buchholz organ from 1832 could be reused which actually determine the fundamental sound character of the new instrument. The new consecration of St. Nikolai Cathedral took place in June 1989; since then musical activities have become possible, too.
