[*]Having just finished university for a few months, I figured its time to celebrate with some of the most whimsical, cheery music I've ever experienced.
Considered one of the best translators of early samba, Vassourinha (birth name Mário Ramos de Oliveira) was just 19 when he passed away in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1942. A life cut far too short, Vassourinha left behind some of the most uplifting artifacts of Brazilian music I've ever heard - they're catchy, charming and surprisingly complete. He laid the base foundation for the genres' popularization and evolution with his glistening, brimming voice and his playful interactions with the instrumentation.
He worked at Radio Record when it was one of the most popular stations in Sao Paulo, and cut 6 singles, all contained on this compilation. They gained popularity throughout the entirety of Brazil, and got the attention of the great Carmen Miranda, who would include him in her live shows.
Unfortunately, his bright future was cut short by tuberculosis, anectodally cited as a result of excessive alcohol consumption.
While little data is recorded on Mário outside of the aforementioned bits, his personality speaks for itself - it shines through his music. Listening to this compilation, I connect to a side of masculinity that seems to be long-since forgotten in modern society - the warm, charismatic, playful side. He's as deft as a fencer and light as a feather, dazzling the listener with sprinkles of enticement and mystery.
There isn't anything self-indulgent about the music, either - it sustains its structured precision without fail. While contemporary pop sounds have frequently plagued the more recent streams of Brazilian music, Vassourinha presents an undiluted experience of purity in his lustrous performances.
This compilation contains the best recordings I've ever heard from the grand nation of Brazil. I encourage any reader to allow this prodigious musical phenom into their lives - I cannot emphasize enough just how utterly charming Vassourinha's music is.
