Album Info & AMG Review
All compositions by Constance Cooper Producer: Dominic Duval
Executive producer for Quixotic Records: Ralph Krine The concert "Coming From Us" was recorded February 7, 2001 at The Church of the Holy Apostles, NYC, NY
Engineering & mastering by Jon Rosenberg Cover art: Nyna Cropas, "God and Lucifer Face-off" (acrylic/canvas, wood, and plywood). Collection of the artist, (C)1991 through the Canadian Artists' Representation Collective, Inc. Liner notes: Constance Cooper While it is impossible to categorize this music, one thing is certain: the results are magnificent by almost any measure. Constance Cooper is the sort of open-minded composer of "modern classical music" who pursues her own path, and, well, damn the torpedoes. This collection was recorded live at a concert in New York City called Coming from Us. Much of the music is composed, but in Cooper's world there is plenty of room for improvisation. It helps, of course, when bassist Dominic Duval (described in the liner notes as an "improviser of new classical music," but probably better known as a jazz improviser) is an integral part of the mix. He seems to regale in the composer's constructs, offering wickedly enervating, fanciful flights throughout. Duval, though, is not the only string player on the album who improvises, adding to the compositional strategies. Although the strings dominate the sound, Cooper keeps her audience off balance with occasional electronics and computer sounds, contributed by bassist William Kannar, pianist/ keyboardist C. Bryan Rulon, and oboist/English hornist Matt Sullivan. Each of the tracks is different in mood and compositional direction, maintaining the spirit of surprise without sacrificing accessibility. On "Melody/Canon," the instructions to the players are to perform "any of the written parts, in any range, and at any tempo," as Cooper delineates in her extensive liner notes. "Nightingale" "honors birds whose call is microtonal," while "Concerto for Solo Violin" features some first-rate improvisations from the strings, including Duval. There is never a tedious moment, and whether the listener approaches this though the lens of avant-garde jazz or from the perspective of modern classical music, or even from that of chamber music, he or she is unlikely to be disappointed with the swirls of sounds, creative mix of tunes, or genuine virtuosity from the players and the composer.
