Editorial Reviews
In Spring 2019, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, led by John Eliot Gardiner, presented a critically-acclaimed European tour of Handels opera 'Semele', including Alexandra Palace Theatre in London, where this live recording took place. Semele had not been performed by John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi ensembles since they originally recorded it in the 1980s and this recording gives listeners the chance to hear a fuller version of the work. A glamorous team of young soloists joins the Monteverdi ensembles to bring the story of Semele to life, including celebrated English soprano Louise Alder, who takes on the title role, with the young tenor Hugo Hymas portraying the amorous Jupiter. ""Semeles musical score is a glorious blend of irresistible solo arias - some virtuosic showstoppers, others lyrical, sensual and evocative, ensembles, duets, accompanied recitatives and (unlike his operas) imposing choruses. Still more than when I first performed it and recorded it almost forty years ago, I feel Semeles time has finally come."" (John Eliot Gardiner)
Review
AllMusic Review by James Manheim [-] Handel called Semele, HWV 58, a musical drama after the manner of an oratorio, and that mixture of modes, plus the work's failure at its first performance (it was considered too risqué for the stolid middle-class English crowd with its secular text on the topic of adultery), consigned it to obscurity until the late 20th century. Even then, Semele remained a bit underrated. The "manner of an oratorio" description indicates the presence of numerous choruses, integral to the action, and not all choirs have made these come alive, and the comic nature of much of the material has been a challenge for Handelian singers. These problems are solved in this live recording from the Alexandra Palace Theatre in London. The choruses are given their proper catchy, chunky shapes, reminiscent of the nearly contemporary Messiah, HWV 56, and the singers are top-notch. Louise Alder delivers fetching tunes (try "O sleep, why dost thou leave me?" from Act Two), and she makes a nice contrast with the delightful comic squawks of Lucile Richardot as Juno (the cast is multinational, but one would be hard put to it to identify a moment where anyone sounded anything less than purely English). Conductor John Eliot Gardiner shifts gears effectively from his smooth sacred music idiom and keeps things moving along, with the choruses crackling in spirit. SDG's engineering work is very good, and text intelligibility is high. In all, for a gift for someone who would like an underrated Handel gem, one could hardly do better than this.
